I like real books. Is that old fashioned? Tried to read it in the bath, and put it in the wallet the wrong way round. Pressed the wrong button and deleted my book. Hmm

Trust me, it will grow on you. I felt the same at first, but a couple of holidays with unlimited books, train journeys with something to read and so on converted me. You can still love actual books too.

I quite liked it on holiday. And the cat can't rub her face on the corners of my kindle!

To be fair I didn't like the book. I think my problem is I won't spend good money on a virtual book, so I end up reading all the crap ones!

I don't like them - especially on holiday when you are trying to charge the thing up.

If your friends/family want to borrow books on your kindle it is a faff

Give me a book any day

I have both.
I love my real books. My golden 50th anniversary edition of Lord of the Rings is my prized possesion.

My Kindle?? How else am i going to carry the entire Harry Potter series, Game of Thrones, Shakespeare, Conan Doyle, other classics and my serial killer/true crime collection in my handbag?
I don't own Mary Poppins' carpet bag!!

I love real books.

I also love my kindle.

I have the Kindle Touch in an amazon case with a built in light. It comes into its own in the winter. I love lying in bed reading all cocooned under the covers. You don't have to disturb the covers and move to turn the pages with a kindle, so you stay snug. :) I prefer the light to reading with the bedside light on as it's a more subtle light too.

I do read the first 10 pages or so of lots of freebie books, but will spend on books I know will be good.

I love mine so much, hands down the best present I have ever had.

I like books, don't get me wrong, but I love reading more. This means I can have 3 or 4 books on the go, download another if I get bored and can re-read my massive first edition hardbacks on the bus without having to cart round an enormous bag!

I have the iBook app, didn't like it at first but now I can't remember the last time I opened a book.

It will grow on you. If not if you decide to sell you will be able to sell it fast.

I don't have one, but what I dislike about them is that you can't lend them to other people. I know that works out better for authors, but still! In our office we always swap books and if we see someone reading a book, we talk about it. If someone's reading on a Kindle, you don't notice what they're reading and if it's a free book there's no chance of reading it yourself, either, unless you have a Kindle, too.

So for me, apart from the aesthetic thing (I absolutely love the feel and look of books), it's stopped reading being a sociable activity.

They are amazing. I love the way if you don't bring your kindle somewhere you can read the book you're in the middle of on the kindle app on your smartphone! i love the future.

Also buying stuff immediately (which does facilitate impulse buying but less dangerous than bookshop browsing).

As a PP says, I love books, but I love reading more.

You're right Imperial but I hate lending books anyway (due to risk of not getting back) so doesn't bother me too much [selfish].

ImperialBlether · 22/10/2013 21:44

And also, if you're reading a thriller, you can tell you're near to the end of the book because of how it feels in your hand. You can flick pages to see whether you're near the end of the chapter. It's not the same seeing "97%", is it?

Report
NuggetofPurestGreen · 22/10/2013 21:51

But if you see 97% you do know you're near the end of a book?! Don't really get the difference there. Page flicking is slower I grant you.

There are things I prefer about real books but also things I prefer about Kindle so I'm happy to have both in my life Grin

ImperialBlether · 22/10/2013 22:09

I think it's because reading a book involves more senses, that's what I meant, so that you feel the thickness of the rest of the book, so you know you're near the end without checking.

YANBU OP I prefer real books for the bath, my kindle tends to tingle in my fingers as it gets steamy. But i love my kindle for everything else, i can get so many choices on it. I use flagfic and download a lot of free fiction and stories for mine :)

I don't ever want a kindle. I love the feel and smell and look of an old and well loved book (like my centenary edition lord of the rings...geek).

Report
NuggetofPurestGreen · 22/10/2013 22:36

Fair enough imperial I do know what you mean. Sometimes I'm surprised at how long books are when I see them "in the flesh" cos you don't get that sense from a Kindle.

I too was once a kindle naysayer and thought 'oh but I love real books' etc. But it's not like they come round your house and take away all your real books when you buy a kindle, or revoke your book buying licence - you can have both!!! Grin
