to be quite offended at this Sains tills person

So I have done my weekly shop at Sainsburys, with two of my children in tow, DS2 aged 3 and DS3 aged 18m. As I had bought a lot, I gave them a chocolate biscuit to keep titchy one from screaming, and medium-sized one from wetting himself as he really needed a wee. Sent DS2 over to the windows bit behind the tills to sit down to make the feeling go away.

When I gave DS3 his biscuit I unthinkingly didn't take the wrapper off and then he immediately ate the foil/papery bit. Tried to get it out of his mouth and he bit my finger so there was a bit of ouching/hopping. Deduced pretty quickly that the till woman was a humourless cow as she just looked at me like I was an irritating sloven (paranoid??).

When I had finished shopping, there was a minor debacle surrounding my coupons which Humourless Till Cow couldn't get to work, and she sat there not looking at me, hitting her computer screen thingy. She had to call the supervisor over.

When I had paid and the supervisor was giving me a petrol coupon at the adjacent empty till, the HTC made a point of getting a cloth and wiping down all the surfaces around her till area. As though I was some skank queen who had contaminated her zone, and she couldn't wait to clean up after me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She even looked at me as she did it!!!!!!!
AIBU to be considering complaining to Sainsburys for this??? Or should I just suck it up?

GobbySadcase Thu 10-Oct-13 11:44:12

There's an awful lot of your perception there with no hard facts...

MammaTJ Thu 10-Oct-13 11:44:47

I am stunned that eating chocolate prevents the need to wee. I need to try this, as I have had three children, the last being 10lb 5oz.

So, how does that work?

Oceansurf Thu 10-Oct-13 11:47:04

What would you rather she'd done? Held up the person behind you even longer whilst she cleaned up?

You sound very high maintenance. YABU.

itsn0tmeitsyou Thu 10-Oct-13 11:47:16

lol I was distracting him and getting him to sit down, to make the feeling subside

oldgrandmama Thu 10-Oct-13 11:48:03

Er, and the problem is ...? She WIPED the conveyor belt thing? And you're offended? Could it just be that something you bought was a bit damp? Or earthy? Or whatever? Made a bit of a mark, so she cleaned it? In my local supermarkets (Sainsbury's, M & S, Waitrose) the checkout staff do it all the time, a quick wipe.
Sounds like you were having a bit of a Bad Shopping Day and OK, the cashier got in a bit of a muddle with your tokens, but I'm sure it was nothing personal and you're feeling a bit hurt over nothing, really.

Have a cuppa, biscuit, relax, chill ...

AngelsLieToKeepControl Thu 10-Oct-13 11:48:06

I think you are being a lot bit paranoid.

I really wouldn't complain about your perception of a look and the fact she wiped her till down, what would you expect them to do about it?

ButThereAgain Thu 10-Oct-13 11:48:10

Damn these till operators who look at you and don't look at you and clean their work areas during a break from their work!

And hoorah for wee-inhibiting chocolate!

JustBecauseICan Thu 10-Oct-13 11:48:41

So while you were doing all that faffing with your children, what was the rest of the queue doing?

exexpat Thu 10-Oct-13 11:48:52

They wipe down the surfaces/scanning area regularly anyway - if the screen gets smeary, things don't scan properly. And no one wants melted chocolate, milk drips etc on their bags. If there were chocolatey fingers in the vicinity, it probably seemed like a good time for a quick wipe over.

I think you are overthinking things, and quite possibly attributing feelings to the check-out operator that she didn't have.

I'd just forget about it and move on.

itsn0tmeitsyou Thu 10-Oct-13 11:49:24

Ocean yes I suspect I am quite high maintenance. I have absolutely no idea how to chill out about this stuff though. I suspect most people do just suck things like this up, and don't even think about them afterwards, but I just dwell. I can't help it. Help me

ParvatiTheWitch Thu 10-Oct-13 11:50:38

Oh, it's sounds stressful. You were stressed and the til woman was a misery guts. Don't take it to heart, it is hard when they are little. You are doing your best, but don't think about the till assistant anymore.
They wipe down everything after almost every customer in Waitrose, unless it is just for me because I am a skank grin.

thistlelicker Thu 10-Oct-13 11:51:14

Oh could u imagine op disgust if she was the customer behind and all the products were covered in some person/child spit covered in chocolate!!

I think it shows good hygiene and good service to show place is clean and tidy!

dyslexicdespot Thu 10-Oct-13 11:52:59

I agree with what the others have said. Why don't you do you weekly shop online in the future. I avoid supermarkets at all costs- they are stressful even without a couple of toddlers.

itsn0tmeitsyou Thu 10-Oct-13 11:54:30

yes except DS3 was in the trolley and didn't touch the till area and DS2 was over by the windows. There wasn't any chocolate from us, but [wail} she looked at me really funny

just writing this has cheered me up grin

rockybalBOOOOa Thu 10-Oct-13 11:56:42

I'm not sure what you're offended by so yes, YABU.

southbank Thu 10-Oct-13 11:57:01

Here we go again, another thread complaining about retail staff!
Yet this one appears really only to have wiped down her till, looked at you and couldn't get your coupons to work.
Yes I think that deserves a complaint to the manager.
In my company a complaint such ad that would mean myself and my entire team would lose all of our bonus that we may have been entitled to that month.
I dont think there is anything here to warrant a complaint is there?
And yes you sound paranoid

PeppiNephrine Thu 10-Oct-13 11:57:03

Bloody hell. Are you always so rude and nasty about total strangers who haven't said a word to you? She didn't DO anything at all, its all in your head. She wiped her working area after your chocolatey shoutey kid was by it, why shouldn't she?
Complain to Sainsburys, if you want them to think you are utterly bonkers.

Madamecastafiore Thu 10-Oct-13 11:57:09

Feck me - what biscuit was it - at 7 months pregnant I would love to know and keep a stash in my handbag to stave off the frequent trips to the loo??

I think you are being a bit paranoid and maybe feel a bit bad about letting your child eat foil!

Oceansurf Thu 10-Oct-13 12:01:17

Have some wine grin Count to 10. Chill. And breathe!

Really doubt it was anything personal at all.

And second whoever said you need to do online shopping grin

Welshwabbit Thu 10-Oct-13 12:03:04

Working on a till all day is not much fun. Even if your perception of what she was doing is correct, maybe she was just having a bad day? And till areas do get mucky and you might as well wipe them down when you have a chance.

VanitasVanitatum Thu 10-Oct-13 12:04:41

Bit harsh peppi, op has already said she was being over sensitive. You don't know anything about the til lady's attitude as you weren't there. I think op just needs some support after a stressy shopping trip. OP just smile nicely and don't over think, she probably didn't mean anything by it at all.

itsn0tmeitsyou Thu 10-Oct-13 12:04:53

southbank linked bonuses sounds very harsh. Does that really happen? I can't see how you can possibly control what other people do.

However, I don't really see why someone in a customer-facing role with no customer services skills should get a bonus. When I've had a bonus it's been for excelling, going above and beyond. She wasn't even managing what I would regard as normal customer service, even forgetting about the wiping.

Pagwatch Thu 10-Oct-13 12:08:42

I think you just felt really self conscious so kind of projected that onto the staff. It's quite an understandable thing to do - it is waaaay easier to be fuming about other people being shits than just endure feeling embaressed and flustered.

I would try and just accept that you are stressed and focus on that rather than finding someone else to be at fault.

She was probably just bored, doing her job nd planning what time she would be able to get a glass of wine and watch shit on the telly.

Katnisscupcake Thu 10-Oct-13 12:09:40

Do you think maybe she wiped her till down because she couldn't get your coupons to work? She might actually have been embarassed that she couldn't get them to work.

Worst case scenario, maybe she was having a bad day (found out someone's ill, had her bag pinched etc). Don't take it personally.

Some shopping days are more stressful than others. Have a cuppa. smile
