He's been sulking since he got home from school, apparrently every single one of his friends has it and me and his df abvu for not allowing him to play it. We do allow him to play some games such a COD, Halo, and a few others that my dp will check first to see whether they are ok but we both feel that GTA is just to adult, lots of sexual content, too much violence etc. My ds is a very very good lad, he is doing well at school and is always well behaved and is really trying not to be upset but I can see he is feeling very left out and all his friends have been teasing him a bit about not being allowed to play it, this won't change our minds but I am feeling very guilty about it, AIBU?

YANBU. I rather question those parents who do allow it.

YANBU my 12 yr old has played COD and HALO at friends houses but he hasn't asked about GTA - it would be a no.

I think 13 is too young, the content is very graphic and really not suitable for anyone that age. Chances are though he will play at friends houses, so be prepared for that.

My 17 year old got it today. No way is it suitable for a 13 year old - no way.

YANBU So many other great games out there that are age appropriate, no need for him to play GTA

I don't blame you.

I posted this on another thread earlier tonight but my ds played it at his friends house - on mute so it was fine Hmm not bloody likely and I was appalled at what my ds was saying you do on the game.. Tbh I don't think I would ever let him play it.. It just seems absolutely vile.

For those who aren't sure of the content, this is from the ESRB website

"In this open-world action game, players assume the role of three criminals whose storylines intersect within the fictional city of Los Santos. Players can switch between each character to follow his storyline, completing missions which often include criminal activities (e.g., stealing cars, executing heists, assassinating targets). Players use pistols, machine guns, sniper rifles, and explosives to kill various enemies (e.g., rival gang members); players also have the ability to shoot non-adversary civilians, though this may negatively affect players' progress as a penalty system triggers a broad police search. Blood-splatter effects occur frequently, and the game contains rare depictions of dismemberment. In one sequence, players are directed to use various instruments and means to extract information from a character; the sequence is intense and prolonged, and it involves some player interaction (i.e., responding to on-screen prompts). The game includes depictions of sexual material/activity: implied fellatio and masturbation; various sex acts that the player's character procures from a prostitute—while no nudity is depicted in these sequences, various sexual moaning sounds can be heard. Nudity is present, however, primarily in two settings: a topless lap dance in a strip club and a location that includes male cult members with exposed genitalia in a non-sexual context. Within the game, TV programs and radio ads contain instances of mature humor: myriad sex jokes; depictions of raw sewage and feces on a worker's body; a brief instance of necrophilia (no nudity is depicted). Some sequences within the larger game allow players to use narcotics (e.g., smoking from a bong, lighting a marijuana joint); cocaine use is also depicted. Players' character can, at various times, consume alcohol and drive while under the influence. The words “f*k,” “cnt,” and “n**ger” can be heard in the dialogue. "

So rated 18 for a damn good reason.

It's so hard isn't it when their friends are telling them they are all allowed to do it, I've tried reminding him that there are probably lots of things he's allowed to do that they can't but he's just really upset, I just feel so bad but am determined to stick to my guns on this, I do have a habit of giving in sometimes especially as he is such a good lad. It's good to know there are actually others who feel the same, I've been googling to see if other people are letting their children play it and was quite shocked that some have been letting them play since they were 8 Shock That made me doubt myself a bit so I thought i'd come on here.

The link doesn't work. Goes through to YouTube but says the video isn't available.

My ds13 said today that his mate has got it.
I said he isn't allowed to play it. I said its demeaning to women.
I would like to see a clip so I can back up my opinion.

I got it today, it's a beautiful looking game and very well done. Suitable for under 18s? Not a chance. This game has the rating it does for very, very good reasons. YANBU, at all!

olidus Most of the footage I've seen isn't particular impressive graphically, doesn't look much different from GTA 4 or even Vice City. Does it look better in game?

I would be questioning any parent who let a 13 year old play any of the GTA games.

Oildus, the language in the first few minutes was shocking.

The graphic are a bit better than in GTA 4

Yeah the graphics are better than GTA 4, or at least I think so. I was playing GTA 4 while waiting for the pre-release of 5 so it's very fresh in my mind and I do think they're better. The movements and mannerisms of the NPCs kind of reminds me of the Sims hides from MLG players

Yes! Very shocking. Definitely not minor friendly.

No problem, the ESRB site is really useful for stuff like this. Another good sites is PEGI.

Yeah I noticed that about the animations. Good to know they have improved the graphics a bit, they always seem to be trailing behind other games wrt graphics.

My generation were playing first gta at 9+. Supposr its a lot better graphics now but none of us have grown up to be stripper shagging murderers yet.

Report
MurderOfGoths · 17/09/2013 21:33

jasmine That's not really the point. No one is saying that it causes them to be murderers etc. But that doesn't make it appropriate for children.

And I say this remembering playing Wolfenstein way back in the mists of time.

The games we grew up with are a world away now.
