If you sold something on eBay and it made 99p....

I "won" an item on eBay and have paid 99p. My maximum bid was higher- a fair price- but no one else bid.

I am embarrassed. It is a collection only item, so I will have to front up and hand over £1. Actually I feel like a twat. It wouldn't be so bad if it was going to be posted. Plus the seller has not replied to me asking where to collect from. This makes me feel worse. Similar items are listed as buy it now for £25/35- I don't know if they're selling but it would have cost £75+ new. ( it is nearly new.)

So if you sell something like this and it only makes 99p do you just grin and bear it? How would you feel about someone turning up at your house with 99p and AIBU to feel bad? Should I give them more anyway?

No don't give them more, it was an auction and you won at 99p, they could have put up a minimum bid but they didn't.

If they wanted more they should have set the reserve higher. Hand over a quid and collect the goods.

Maybe they just want rid of it and are glad that someone is going to come and take it away? If they wanted more money, they should have put it on at a higher price. Make sure you get your 1p change

I think the seller can always say no can't they?

I'd probably make a bit of a joke of it. Hand the item over, take the £1 and ask "You want your penny change? "

It's the risk you take when you start at 99p.

I sold something for 99p recently that was worth much more.

Worse still, I totally forgot to post it, realised, panicked, paid for first class postage and lost money selling it.

Why would you give them more?! You've bagged a bargin, be happy not fretful. Think of it this way, if the seller was that bothered about getting a fair price for the item they would have put a reserve price on if.

Oh and don't offer more. You might be doing them a favour by taking it, you never know and it's fair and square.

I often advertise thing for 99 p collection only, admittedly the things were in good shape and were worth far more than 99p but they are in eBay because I find is easier to sell them to a happy customer than spending years trying to "find them a home" or damaging the car taking them to a charity shop/tip.

Oh I don't know. It's just the having to face them and handing over 99p. I feel cheap. Still you don't buy on eBay for the buying experience I suppose. It is a "nice" item.

If they didn't want to let it go for 99p they should have sucked up the seller fees and started it higher. Most people just want rid though.

If I'd sold it, I might feel frustrated, but I wouldn't expect any more than the agreed price.

If I was buying it, I might hand over £5 and not expect change, assuming it wasn't a "professional seller". I've done that at charity shops when something has been vastly underpriced.

I've done this and offered the seller a bit more. They refused saying it was fair enough. Then I saw that they lost money on the P&P too.

I'd communicate again. You aren't a dealer and if a few quid more makes you feel better I'd do it.

A friend won a 12ft trampoline for 99p and had to go to collect it, she said she was really embarrassed but the seller was very laid back but did admit she should have put a reserve on it.

I once sold about 40-odd plant pots for 99p. The buyer was really embarrassed, but I didn't mind at all. They were in a garden shed in a rented house I was living in, and I needed to clear the space for firewood. (Landlady didn't mind btw!!) They went to someone who was wanting to start her own business selling plants .... she drove more than 20 miles to pick them up - I was just delighted that they went to someone so nice, and always hoped she managed to get her start-up business going successfully.

It's tough. If you list for 99p you have to be prepared to sell it for that.

Mind you, I won an auction a couple of weeks ago for £1.20 odd and was thrilled. I emailed the seller three times and got no response. Complete waste of time and effort - was very annoyed.
