AIBU?

to worry if I can use my phone when snuggling baby 6 days old?

Hello, perhaps a PFB alert, but I dont know if I should use my mobile when holding DS. Internet sites are split between those that say mobiles near babies are dangerous and those that say not.

DS is very windy and is sleep best propped up on me. Typing this mesage I am obviously on my phone.

Any scientific types out there that can reassure me one way or the other?

I'm not scientific at all, but I just wouldn't, simply because there's not enough evidence either way. It's a risk.

Oh sorry and CONGRATULATIONS of course :)

Also, you need to be tuned into a baby so young, not texting and stuff. That's just my opinion. :)

Don't think anyone will know much about this but safe to say that millions of women do it...

Personally, I wouldn't hold it close to the baby as I know how hot my ear can get when on the phone. But in the other hand, I really don't see a problem. One of the worst parts of having a new baby is the way that everything carries risk and you simply cannot be 100% risk-averse or you will then walk into different risks associated with worrying too much. Somebody told me babies are more resilient than you think and I found that very helpful :)

Congratulations, by the way.

Congratulations on your new baby!

I wouldn't have got through the many, many night feeds as happily as I did without my phone for MNetting etc. Was a lifesaver.

I feel like 'an old git' now. But I still hold by what I've said. Because, we don't know, I wouldn't.

Flowers for you :)

People never used to know that smoking was harmful until the research was done.

Thanks for the congrats. When feeding I tend to talk and stroke him, its just the occasions when he will only sleep on my lap that I am tempted!

I also try and read instead but I can't concentrate on the words when tired

I've said my piece. I'm happy to hear scientific theories, from both sides.

In the meantime, I wouldn't.

During the many hours and days on the sofa cuddling a sleeping dd I would have gone mad without my phone/ipad. I really wouldn't worry.

What do you actually worry will happen?

Oh by the way in a few months time your tiny newborn will commandeer yiur phone to start making pretend calls.

Switch off the Wifi and play games on it instead if you are worried. I personally wouldn't have bothered wondering about this.

I would've gone mad if I didn't have my laptop or Iphone with both my babies at night time for night feeds. Even during the day infact.

Do you feel the same about the microwave and home phone?

Thing is, aren't we all walking through wifi "rays" all the time? They're all around us, in every direction. Baby is inhaling them in his cot.

Did you know you get a bigger dose of wifi rays from a 20 min mobile phone call than from a year's wifi?

Forget wifi waves, what about radio waves? Prior to that analogue tv signals?

Report
Fakebook · 10/09/2013 03:30

Don't know why I've written "prior to that".

Is this a new thing?

As others have said, it's the only thing which keeps me sane during feeding sometimes!

Baby's head in left hand. Phone in right. It's either that or face up to an hour feeding baby in the pitch black. Plus the backlight gives me enough light to relatch baby.

We're exposed to rays all the time, in some parts of the country the strongest ones are the background radiation from the rock.

It's the only thing that keeps me awake during the night feeds and preserves my sanity

Another one whose phone kept them sane during all the hours awake with feeds. It wasn't even something that occurred to me.

DS now grabs my phone and walks around with it pretending to talk, wait til that starts.

Really?! I wouldn't worry about this at all. We are bathed in wifi, radio etc waves constantly.

Never thought to worry about it. Did you use your phone at all whilst pregnant?

Only thing to watch out for is dropping it on baby...

Congratulations. Ds2 is 6weeks & just out of his newborn clothes, enjoy those snuggles while you can!!

I also worry a lot about this. I try to use the phone as far from the baby as possible (exposure reduces in proportion to the square of the distance, apparently). Talking on the phone is much worse than browsing and using wifi is better than using 3G, so I avoid phone calls and browsing in non wifi areas.

As far as I'm concerned the only danger is dropping the phone on the baby. I didn't drop my iPhone on 3 week old DD oh no I didn't.

(I'm writing this message with 4 week old DD attached to me)

I stopped using mine over dds head when I dropped it on her face at a few weeks old.Blush
