AIBU?

to be bloody annoyed with Nature Babycare Nappies?

(Naty ones) I use them with DS2 (2.8) and have done on and off since he was born (he was also in cloth from about 4 months to about 18m, but I can't hack it any longer with his horrible sloppy poos, nor can I find affordable trousers that fit over them). I prefer them to other brands because they seem to have upped their game a lot in the last couple of years (they were rubbish when DS1 was a baby) and have good absorbency, and yes, I've also bought into their alleged biodegradability. They make me feel less guilty about abandoning cloth, anyway! Grin Pampers and similar smell horrible, look horrible and cost about the same, and I found Pampers leak like a bastard. Tesco own brand are fine but I want to stick with something that might be a little easier on the environment.

Ok. So I like them for various reasons, but is it me, or do they have REALLY shoddy construction? You'll often find that half a pack has wonky side tabs, like there was a run of duff ones on the production line and they all ended up in one packet. Sometimes the sodding tab isn't even there on one side, other times it's bonded to the nappy in a way that it won't unpeel, and you end up tearing it. And if you use any force at all (i.e. while changing a nappy on a v v wriggly 2.8 yr old with ASD) the bloody tabs pull off very easily. At about 22p per unit, that is not on. Angry I end up leaving the torn ones to one side and then fixing them with sellotape, or reinforcing them with a washable nappy cover over the top. I have never come across this sort of production error problem with any other disposable.

Should I just send the crappily-tabbed nappies back to NatureBaby and point out how shite it is? What would they do in return? I have a fair amount of product loyalty to them, and the fact that they (allegedly) biodegrade is important to me, so I don't want to stop buying them, but it's almost enough to drive me back to cloth!

(am awaiting the posts telling me that IABU for a) having a nearly 3 yo in nappies still, and b) not being in cloth to start with. Wink)

I think you need to contact the company and explain that you are unhappy with their nappies at the moment. Is there a customer care contact number on the pack? If so ring that, explain the issue and see what they say.
They may well ask you to send in the offending nappies for testing.
They can't improve a product if they don't know there is an issue.

This is true. Smile Am being a bit can't be arsed about it, but agree there's no point in moaning if I don't tell them. I did wonder if any other Naty-using MNers had noticed similar probs.

Contact them. I didn't have those problems when I used them for my DCs but that was a few years ago - maybe they are cost cutting and have gone too far?

Yes yes yes.

My mum buys these ones so my children use them when we are staying at her house and they are shite. Exactly as you say, the tabs are not sticky enough or are wonky or just set back too far so the waist is tiny.

I buy Tesco own brand (which I think are soft, well fitting and non leaky)

I tried them and found similar issues to you. We use Bambo - VERY impressed with their environmental credentials. They're well constructed, sturdy, absorbent. Yes, expensive, but it goes a long way to assuage my guilt at not using cloth. I'd recommend them.

I used them once and DS's poo nearly always ended up leaking out the side.

I think they're the number 1 brand in Sweden - must be a lot of poo dripping everywhere at play groups there! Or maybe Swedish babies have differently shaped bums.

I use them as they are the only nappies not to give DS a rash (but he's only in them at night now though), but yes, frequent problems with construction over the three years we've been buying them. Tearing too easily if tugged at all, sometimes wonkily cut tabs, some with no sticky on one tab. However I stuck with them because they've never leaked, I like the plain appearance, they don't smell chemically, and they haven't caused skin irritation.

Have no probs with them leaking at all. Different nappies just suit different babies, I guess.

MissPlum, where do you get Bambo from? And are they even more expensive than Naty?

This morning I got a nappy out of the bag that didn't have a tab on one side at all - it made me snap and post this!

I remember getting one pack with some tabs missing. Maybe it's just a dodgy batch?

I have always been happy with them to be honest.
Started using them in 2007, couple of years break, then again in 2011. Suppose I love them really!! Bit sad...

Nope, this has happened consistently over several packs in the last year. Standards are obviously slipping. Surprised I'm still buying them, really.

I had a couple of packs of "wrong uns". I emailed and complained. They asked for the serial number on the pack and sent me vouchers for new packs.

Not had a problem since we moved to size 5s. I think it's the 4+ size I found the most inconsistent.

nancerama · 23/08/2013 12:21

Should add, they were swift to respond and incredibly apologetic.

I've had similar issues and emailed to complain. They were very quick to respond and sent vouchers to replace the two bad packs.

We use them when we're visiting folk so can't use cloth - they're the only brand which have never given DD nappy rash or (unlike Sainsbury's own) chemical burns.

We had one pack (size 4) with crappy loose tabs but the rest have been fine and I like that they don't smell! They've never leaked either.

beepoff · 23/08/2013 12:37

I also had a pack all of which were missing one side tab. I thought it was a new design!

I wrote to Naty, they responded same day and they sent me a voucher. Brilliant customer service and one of the reasons I still buy them.

Boots are doing 3 for 2 on all baby products at the moment so I suggest going down there and stocking up.

Gosh yes do contact the company.

We used moltex back when all round here was fields, ordered from some hippy dippy shop, pre internet proliferation of websites lol.

I remember them being shite when ds was a baby, same problems. I stopped buying them in favour of Tescos own.

MeAndMySpoon I buy them online here: www.topak.co.uk/bambonature-eco-friendly-nappies-environmentally
It's the cheapest way I've found. Do give them a try. Seriously, I wouldn't go back to Naty after using these. Best nappies ever!

Oh crap! www.topak.co.uk/bambonature-eco-friendly-nappies-environmentally

And I don't work for them (just realised I sound a bit toooooo enthusiastic), just think they are superior to any other nappy I've tried as well as being the most eco-friendly brand.

Report
RenterNomad · 23/08/2013 15:18

I use Naty occasionally, but mostly Sainsbury's little ones "eco" nappies, as the chemical smell is an issue (and the effect on sensitive skin was the issue when we were nappying eczema-prone DS). The Sainsbos ones are nice: very neutral smell, seem well constructed (bulkier than Pampers when dry, but as Pampers swell up just as much when wet, what's the difference?)

Report
TheContrastOfWhiteOnWhite · 23/08/2013 15:20

I use Naty when I use disposables and never had a problem. Sainsbury's eco leak within 20 minutes most of the time. And stink.

Report
OpenMindedSceptic · 23/08/2013 15:27

I used them with DC1 and now again with DC2. I had a bad pack ones when they kept bursting but that was years ago with DC1. No issues at all recently.

I've had the same issues with these in the past, they must have some dodgy machinery on their production line as the problems/ missing bits have varied.
I had a whole bag once with no right side sticky tab, that was the last straw and I haven't bought them much since (unless on offer... :))
To be fair, I contacted them easily via their website and they quickly sent me a voucher to replace the packet (and I think I even used a bit of sellotape with the dodgy ones so as not to put unused disposables into landfill, double environmental whammy!)

Report
PoppyAmex · 23/08/2013 15:34

I use them and love them (and cloth overnight) - I think I tried every brand of disposables, but I could not stand the smell Envy

But yes, you're right about the tabs often not being sticky enough.

Report
CheeseFondueRocks · 23/08/2013 15:34

We've used them for 18 months and only had one packet that was dodgy. I still prefer them over any other kind.
