Talking of birthing drugs.. I loved loved loved gas and air. I'd had it a few years before when I broke my little toe and the doctor had to straighten it out for me. So when I went into labour I was seriously looking forward to the gas and air.

Pethidine just made me sleepy.. not great IMO.

Can you get gas and air in the shops???

I have a cupboard full of morphine, it works well, I was on it nearly a year and had no withdrawal symptoms at all. It's one of those lovely instant things, as soon as it goes down the throat your whole body just floats away.

"Now ladies, folk are going to be somewhat hysterical about what you're 'allowed' to eat, drink, take, do, etc whilst you're pregnant - pay particular attention to which painkillers you're allowed (not many), but DO retain your sense of humour because let me tell you now, when the time is right you can have heroin, the rreeeeeeeally really good stuff. I'd imagine they don't tell people in labour it's heroin to avoid the whole freaking out 'I'm a drug addict' thing, since the propaganda about heroin is pretty gruesome.
In itself, it's a wonderful anaesthetic and obstetric drug. One dose won't make you an addict, though some anti-drug campaigners would have you believe it.
Used incorrectly it's a hellish slide to oblivion, though people who want to spend their lives being anaesthetised are obviously not happy people to begin with.
And heroin /= morphine. They're related but not the same.

There are much stronger opiates out there too, for those of you who are interested. I hate opiates though. They make me vomit and give me a sore neck/headache.

The bastards gave me pethidine with no anti-sickness drug when I was in labour with DS1. I vomited copiously / felt dreadful until it wore off. They were evil in that hospital.

It is heroin. Diamorphine is the chemical name for heroin (its morphine on steroids, its much stronger).

By the way on its own its not actually harmful at all (other than the fact it's highly addictive). The problem with street heroin is that its cut with all sorts of other shit.

I can see why people who have had difficult lives and want to forget stuff end up heroin addicts, I had diamorphine in labour and there is a huge chunk of time I have no memory of (not the actual birth though, it was a long labour).

You must never take medicine for hellish migraines, D&V or use nit lotion or eat runny eggs but all bets are off when you are in labour. Bring on the heroin!
