AIBU?

To want to be able to buy drinks without sweetener in them?

I have noticed that lots of drinks now have it in, even the ones which aren't low sugar.

I hate the aftertaste of them, and they give me terrible wind Blush

I don't drink tea or coffee so drink squash, but even they seem to be getting harder to find without it. I like high juice but the low sugar ones are getting more and more and it's sometimes hard to find a normal one. A lot of squashes like Robinsons have it in all their squashes.

And fizzy drinks like fanta and sprite have it, the low sugar and the normal ones now!

So AIBU to want to buy drinks with sugar in instead? Yes I know you shouldn't have too much, and try to not drink too much but I would like to have a drink of it sometimes.

My not so darling husband says that sweetener has been proved to be fine and doesn't affect people so I basically must be making it up Hmm

YADDDNBU
Sweeteners are poison. Aspartame is banned in the US.

I don't think Ribena has them in and Waitrose own brands don't.

Maybe we should start a campaign against them in drinks that aren't low sugar.

There was a lot of campaiging in the 80s about various E numbers and it was effective.
Very few sweets have Sunset Yellow in them these days.

Yanbu. I have noticed that too. All of a sudden everything's got sweetners on top of sugar. Tastes horrid.

How can you be making up that you get an aftertaste? I also hate the taste of aspartame and other cheap sweeteners. Sucralose isn't too bad. A lot of manufacturers are using them because they are so much cheaper than sugar.

I agree, they taste terrible. I have found appletiser, orangina and Dr. Pepper to be okay. For squashes you will probably have to look at "grown up" and organic squashes.

I couldn't agree more OP - it's a complete nightmare trying to find drinks without aspartame or other chemical sweetners. In fact I'd like to find drinks that are really low sugar too - even no sugar but it's impossible. It's because the artifical stuff is so cheap so it's money making device used by the manufacturers. Makes my piss boil so it does!

^^ What about this sort of thing?

Just look up 'concentrated fruit juice' on Google - there's lots of choice.

I agree. I can always taste it too. Bottlegreen cordials and the like seem to be fine (although are more expensive).

oh and your husband is wrong - i cannot have chewing gum as it is packed with aspartame and makes my heart race scarily.

sweetners make my heart race and pepsi max gives me a stomach ache and i go hyper . no help really but sweetners are the work of the devil, what about fruit juices if they are supposed to be fresh then they might not have sweetners in them, I drink full sugarfizzy drinks but i dont drink a lot except in vodka

YANBU

I'm stuck with coke, coke or coke.

I loved lemon Fanta, but they have ruined it putting sweetners in it.

I'm well aware of all the calories in it, I don't drink it often, but on a really hot day a can of cold fizz can really hit the spot.

I hate the taste of sweeteners too, and won't give aspartame to the dc. We buy Ribena, Vimto, Morrison's Hi Juice, all of which have sugar not sweetener. HTH.

YADDDNBU, I've been trying to avoid these for my children for years after seeing what it did to my oldest (he had hyperactivity trouble due to artifical stuff) M & S don't have Aspatame in but I think it does have another one in. The best one I've found is Sun-sip summer fruits, it doesn't have any in, it is available at Tesco (some stores but definately online). Something needs to be done imo.

I avoid all drinks with sweetener too. So I'm restricted to good quality high juice squash (still check label though) and the posh cordials and wine.

I will look at the suggestions, thanks for those :)

I drink coke but not Pepsi as it gives me stomach cramps so its interesting you say that mrsjay

We should start a Mumsnet campaign! I hate the stuff, although sugar isn't good for you at least it's not artificial.

I buy bottle green squash.

It's abit steep at £2 odd a bottle, but at least it's not full of crap and we don't have it every day

there's also rocks which is similar price

both you can get in most supermarkets

mrsjay · 08/08/2013 12:08

a little bit of sugar must be better for you than sweetners imo
