  1. You should judge aplicants on their decisions. Yes. They chose to smoke which means they're likely to die earlier, smell, be ill etc. They have made a really bad decision: To smoke.

  1. If they say they regret their decision but can't give up they're addicts. I would tend to avoid giving known drug addicts or alcoholics a job, and the same goes for tobacco addicts.

I would like to reply in the manner that I wish. But I am too polite. And a non-smoker.

YABU unless you would have some way of assessing every potential employee's bad decisions.

Debt?
Not exercising enough?
Not eating a healthy diet?
The list could be endless.

You could go on forever -

If someone likes a drink would you stop them?

If they drive a car they be injured in a crash and not able to work

Overweight people - more likely to have a heart attack and need time off best not employ them!

Women - well they might have the audacity to want children and expect maternity leave!

No it's not illegal. Alcohol isn't illegal either. If I told my boss I need a 5 minute break a couple of times a day for a quick Snakebite, what would she say?

I'd take up smoking again just so I could then blow smoke in your face and stub my cigarette out on your sitting room floor.

tethersend · 05/08/2013 22:24

What if you took up smoking?

What if you gave up?

What if you smoked in secret or only away from work?

Would you not employ anyone who drank?

Report
Sirzy · 05/08/2013 22:24

Ye coz getting pissed at work is comparable to having a cigarette at your break isn't it!

So it's ok to smoke just not during the working day?

Plenty of places stipulate this already.

A snakebite a few times a day would cloud your judgement & ability to make decisions.

Smoking doesn't. HTH.
