To be pissed off with people not being able to tell the difference between bear / bare. It's hardly rocket science. If I see 'bare with me' one more time ....I clearly need to stop skulking in the kitchen on mumsnet and get out and have some quality time with the kids.

it's "would of" "could of" that drives me bananas.

thebody Fri 02-Aug-13 13:30:10

it can be 'rocket science' to a dyslexic person op.

spelling ability is no measure of intelligence.

LazyMonkeyButler Fri 02-Aug-13 13:30:21

YANBU. Same with there/their/they're.

Crinkle77 Fri 02-Aug-13 13:30:28

Yeah it is annoying but stop being mean. I have just read that post and if the OP was upset she might have just done it in error without thinking.

Edendance Fri 02-Aug-13 13:33:24

Agreed. Can't bear it

cushtie335 Fri 02-Aug-13 13:34:32

Edendance I see what you did there smile

Why am I loosing the will to live?

ImNotBloody14 Fri 02-Aug-13 13:41:57

It's almost as bad as 'OMG'

squoosh Fri 02-Aug-13 14:55:33

To be honest bare/bear is one of the ones that makes me pause for a second and think 'hmmm, now which is it........'. Whereas they're/their/there comes instinctively.

and 'it's to late' and 'you're children'. You see that a lot on here.

I used to have a job that required me to be a professional pedant. I like well-written copy and always endeavour to use correct spellings and grammar myself. However, MN is not like writing a job application and I wouldn't allow a simple mistake like that to alter how much credence I'll give the opinion it's presenting. Education and intelligence are not the same thing. Furthermore, even well-educated types often use the wrong one when typing furiously, and on a fast-moving site such as this I'm sure most posters do not proof-read, or give a cursory skim read only if they do.

'alot' was always top of my pet hate list until I saw this cartoon. Now it makes me smile! grin

Dahlen Fri 02-Aug-13 15:07:37

I draw the line at text speak though. I have to read it out loud for it to make any sense to me, and simply CBA to do that.

Twirlyhot Fri 02-Aug-13 15:09:26

Grin and bare it = flashing

mummybare Fri 02-Aug-13 15:10:06

I can't think what you're talking about. Ahem.

I see "here, here" so often, it gets me doubting if it is or actually isn't right. I do know it's "hear, hear" but when you see something wrong all the time, you begin to doubt yourself!

Oh the grin was for the 'alot' cartoon

BawbagBiggins Fri 02-Aug-13 15:18:50

I was under the impression that either bare or bear were both perfectly acceptable in that context..

. plus it actually so uncomfortably warm here that I would be almost willing to bare with anybody right now ;)

I LOVE the Alot. I am no longer going to be annoyed by this.

ClockWatchingLady Fri 02-Aug-13 15:24:14

Seriously, what's wrong with poor spelling as long as it's comprehensible? What's language for?

Sorry - realise this is not massively in the spirit of things grin

Strangle them with your bear hands.
