AIBU?

To Be Pissed Off By Troll Hunters?

They feed trolls and disrupt the flow of threads.

Troll Hunting breaches the Talk Guidelines, if you believe that someone is a troll, use the Report button and ignore the thread. It really is that simple, but repeatedly I see people accusing posters of being trolls.

So why do they do it?Confused. Does it make the hunter feel superior, that they have been so insightful and feel the rest of us, mere mortals need their wisdomHmm or do they live such sheltered lives that they cannot imagine anything outside the realms of their own personal experience?

I have recently seen it happen on threads regarding child abuse and suicide. I understand that these are sensitive, triggering topics, but they are real problems for some people who come here seeking support.

So AIBU to be pissed off by Troll Hunters and wish they would stop it? After all, if it really is a Troll thread, all the hunters do is push it back up the Active board and give it more traffic, thereby feeding it.Angry

Yanbu, it's fucking annoying! I've had a relationship thread before that had loads of troll hunters on it. It was real and happening to me in RL, the troll hunters just made me feel worse.

Because its so annoying when you see a thread which ios so obviously untrue

Good luck with this post. You're gonna get slaughtered.

While I have your attention...meet up? Grin

My troll radar is shit, so I appreciate one this looks iffy post.

After that just report and let HQ decide.

I think it's too hard to tell as so many people lead such extraordinary lives and have so many issues.

how can you really tell to be honest.?

YANBU. I used to blatantly call out trolls, now I just report threads that are obviously goady or I just find suspicious.

Not to be confused with the movie Trollhunters (which is very good and won't remotely piss anyone off :)

"I appreciate one this looks iffy post."

Yep, can appreciate the occasional heads up and reminder that this is the internet, etc.

Every third post page troll-hunting: not so useful. That's all about the ego and hunting mentality of the posters.

Xylem, of course it's annoying, but why Troll hunt? Why not just report and ignore? Or are you one of those hunters who thinks that you know better than MNHQ and the rest of the posters here?

Tee, would love to do a meet-up soon, but am heading over to the Edinburgh Fringe next week. When were you thinking? I don't mind a bit of aggro coming this way. The amount of Troll hunting, hunning and kissing that's been going on lately has made me feel all stubby and sweary, so it will be good to get it out.Grin

Well for example, there was an obvious paedophile on this morning. And I for one will call out his or her BS and risk getting banned a thousand times before some unsuspecting parent shares an anecdote about their children for someone to exploit for their own disgusting kicks.

ComposHat · 01/08/2013 13:56

I've done it sometimes and have usually regretted it.

MNHQ could help by stomping on the troll threads faster, there's the fucking Hamwidge poster who is allowed to start bullshit thread after bullshit thread, because pretending to be a stupid is hilarious apparently.

When someone claims to be a 'regular who has name changed' it would be helpful if MNHQ could confirm this on thread and if they are a new poster masquerading as a 'regular' shut the thread down pronto.

I've seen threads reach their conclusion where it's so completely obvious it's a troll the whole way through, but nobody says a thing. Usually on positive/non support threads, nobody suspects. They cheer the OP on like no tomorrow and I'm sat here silent, thinking, bullshit.

But I could be wrong, and what's obviously a lie to me may actually be completely true, so I say nothing. It's best to just report.

Kirjava the ones that set my troll radar twitching are the ones that have such an obvious remedy and a pressing need for immediate action, yet the poster's first course of action is to sit down and log onto AIBU?

'My house is a blazing inferno, WIBU to call the fire brigade?'

'My dad is having a heart attack and is screaming in agony AIBU to call an ambulance?'

That sort of thing.

Either their priorities are completely fucked up or they are trolling.

Report
ParsingFancy · 01/08/2013 14:30

Oh I don't know, Compos, I've seen regulars under the own names saying, "Should I call an ambulance?" and people have (correctly) shrieked "Fuck yes, do it NOW!"

I think if you don't like fuss, or are ill and impaired, it can be hard to make a good judgement.

Parsingfancy, I think you're right. Troll hunters do it to satisfy their own ego.

Dontmeanto, so your solution was to feed the troll?Hmm This is the Internet, there are of course unsavory characters and we should all be aware of that. Do you really think that the posters here need your protection? You either think very highly of yourself or very little of the rest of the posters here. The solution is to Report and if you think it is truly necessary, post a message saying that you have reported.

Tee, won't be able to make the 16th but should make one of the others.Smile

Because trolls are annoying as fuck and this is the only forum I have ever been on where posters must meekly sit in silence while idiots run rampaging?

I always think its amusing that on a parenting site all the posters are treated like children.

Report
usualsuspect · 01/08/2013 14:59

I agree Stuntgirl.

This is the only forum I've been on where troll hunters get more grief than the actual trolls.

Report
dontmeanto · 01/08/2013 15:02

And does your post on troll hunting make you much better? It's in the guidelines, people can choose to follow them or not. Do you think so highly of yourself that starting a thread about it is going to single-handedly stop troll-hunting for good?

I agree, especially when MNHQ allow blatant troll thread after blatant troll thread (for example the Hamwidge poster who I mentioned above) if you are going to forbid troll hunting, you need to stamp down hard on troll threads and stop being so woefully inconsistent or alternatively just allow it to be a free for all where everyone can call anyone a troll.

I don't mind either, but MNHQ should make their minds up.
