To be annoyed that DP's family eat fast food every day?

I know I probably am BU and its none of my business what they eat but it's really been getting on my nerves - don't know if its the hormones making me more irritable than normal!
Me and DP are living with them until the tenants have moved out of our new house next month and I'm not kidding, every single day his mum sends his dad out to get her a McDonalds for her and his sister. His sister is 19.

They eat it every single day! AIBU to let it annoy me?

We're having our first baby in February and I think I'll be too worried to let baby stay overnight out of fear they'll just feed it McDonalds/other crap!

Why would it annoy you?

Holly94 Tue 30-Jul-13 20:04:15

I really don't know I'm just so irritable at the moment when I see his dad coming home with yet another bag of fast food I just think why would anyone want to eat it repeatedly? Or is it not as bad for you as I think?

BlackeyedSusan Tue 30-Jul-13 20:05:55

euuuw think of their arteries. work out how often you would like your child to have a treat and do not send them more often. grin let them visit you.

Holly94 Tue 30-Jul-13 20:06:30

That's exactly what I think! His mum and sister are just setting themselves up for heart attacks.

valiumredhead Tue 30-Jul-13 20:07:07

Sounds like it's time you moved outwink

It is bad for them, but it's not bad for you, so I can't see why it's annoying you. People make poor choices all the time, and there's precious little anyone else can do about it, so you just have to accept that they do things differently from you, be grateful that they are letting you stay when you need it and tell your hormones to pipe down!

ImNotBloody14 Tue 30-Jul-13 20:10:44

Yabu - you eat what you want and they eat what they want. It doesnt affect you.

Footface Tue 30-Jul-13 20:11:22

Maybe you could cook them a meal as a thankyou for letting you stay

thenightsky Tue 30-Jul-13 20:12:11

YANBU. It would get on my nerves to not have proper food for a whole month (I'm assuming there is no cooking being done and you have having to go along with this diet as guests).

hermioneweasley Tue 30-Jul-13 20:12:41

YABVU and what footface said

EeTraceyluv Tue 30-Jul-13 20:13:57

The expense would piss me off! Presumably they can afford it?

emuloc Tue 30-Jul-13 20:14:03

My husbands family were like this always eating fast food and ready made rubbish. If I am honest I did not think too much off them for being like that. I belive you should eat as well as you are able too. That entails for me cooking from scratch for most of my meals. It works for me so its what I do. If they wish to end up ill it is up to them. They are adults.

They are letting us live there but his mum is charging us rent which she says is for 'food' but not cooking/buying anything in so we end up doing a supermarket shop anyway and cooking ourselves - I wouldn't expect them to cook/provide food for us, and I would have contributed towards household bills but it gets on my nerves that she makes us pay rent towards the food bill then eats fast food everyday.

Argh sorry for the drip feed!!!

squoosh Tue 30-Jul-13 20:15:02

Lots and lots of things that don't effect me irritate me.

I'd be a bit judgey (inside the privacy of my own head) but it wouldn't put me off them if I got on with them otherwise. They don't exactly have varied palates do they, having McDonalds every day?

mrsjay Tue 30-Jul-13 20:18:35

oh i hope your house is ready soon you sound like you are about to blow a gasket, does she not buy any food at all and you are giving her money and THEN having to shop that would do my head in more than them eating Mcdonalds every night, I know it is annoying you but really it is their tea and if that is what they want then what can you do , and when and if the time comes for your baby to visit them you can just give them food for it but that is a long way off just try and relax and think of your new house

ApocalypseThen Tue 30-Jul-13 20:20:00

In fairness though, you can't expect to live rent free and who gets to tell their landlord what they should buy with the ill gotten gains?!

ImNotBloody14 Tue 30-Jul-13 20:20:00

Well, unless you die in an accident, most of us 'end up' ill. No-one dies of good health wink

Holly94 Tue 30-Jul-13 20:21:15

mrsjay, they have things in like pot noodles.. Not really a substantial pregnancy diet so I cook pasta etc from scratch.

Ooh I'm all nervous now in case she's a mumsnetter too blush

Snazzyenjoyingsummer Tue 30-Jul-13 20:25:30

I would 'reassign' the rent you are paying them, in your head, to be going towards the actual bills. It is a bad habit they have to eat like that every day but try and blank it as much as possible. People who have such entrenched bad habits are unlikely to thank you for saying 'how can you eat that stuff every day?' You can also tell them not to feed your baby fast food when the time comes.

mrsjay Tue 30-Jul-13 20:26:03

oh well least you are eating ok now I do like a mcdonalds but every night it must be bleurgh

TheFuzz Tue 30-Jul-13 20:26:26

Every night... Holy moly.

squoosh Tue 30-Jul-13 20:29:24

I have McDonalds about twice a year on those rare occasions that I have a hangover. I enjoy it soooooooooooooo much. Every day though? Nah.

justanuthermanicmumsday Tue 30-Jul-13 20:31:10

you get To live rent free in my house. It's the norm if i needed a place i could live rent free at my parents home, or sisters or brothers, and they at mine. I wouldn't dream of asking for money but I'm sure they would give money towards food costs.

i know what you mean about them eating out . it's common the way i grew up to live with extended families. So sis in laws living with parents. one of them got my brother onto fast food in such a way they'd be having fish fingers burgers for breakfast. I'd turn up to visit mum unaware and they'd ask me if i want breakfast I'd be like ok tea maybe noting else, they'd offer me fishfkngers at 10am? I would express my disgust and tell my brother he was ruining his body. But you don't have to eat it so try and turn a blind eye, I'd leave off comments too since its not your home it would be rude and ungracious.

EvaBeaversProtege Tue 30-Jul-13 20:31:38

Do you think they eat like that do they don't have to cook?

Do they make you feel welcome in general?
