To be upset about this text sent to DP.

"You fucker, you never told me you had an STD. What am i going to tell my husband"

I know that DP has been sent this because he told me. he said that he got this next late last night from an unknown number. I suspect that it is some sort of "joke" text as i would imagine the likelyhood of DP straying (presumably with more than one woman, one to catch STD and one to pass it on too) is as likely as him taking a cheese grater to his gonads. I absolutely trust him 100%.

What upsets me is the idiot that sent this. What was their game? Presumably they know DP (to have his number). Do they realise that if our relationship was less strong or open it could have split us up? Why would they want to do that? in what universe was text funny?

I guess i am touchy about the cheating subject as both my parents were serial cheats and it marred our childhood (Dad is now living with his long term mistress, mum had serial affairs as revenge/to get attention from dad and ended up running off with one of the blokes). AIBU to let it get to me, would it bug you?

A horrible text to get and I can understand why you're upset - but really, could it not just have been a wrong number? One mistyped digit maybe?

ChippingInWiredOnCoffee Thu 27-Jun-13 21:19:27

Why not ring the number?

It is just as likely to be a wrong number.

RiotsNotDiets Thu 27-Jun-13 21:20:31

You trust him. So forget about it.

Don't let this wind you up, someone's being a knob and they want you to rise to it (I suspect it's from an idiot mate of his who thinks that they are hilarious and outrageous).

cozietoesie Thu 27-Jun-13 21:21:20

There are dozens of these roaming around - and even sites that will send them for you or call your intended victim. (ie the unknown number.)

I would be a little concerned if were he that someone had targeted him for it, though.

Alibabaandthe40nappies Thu 27-Jun-13 21:21:29

I would ring the number.

LandaMc Thu 27-Jun-13 21:21:36

I've received several texts that were obviously meant for someone else, all about those moving - they may just have mistyped the number. But if a 'joke' text then yes it's tasteless and not funny.

Are you tempted to get DH to call the number?

flipchart Thu 27-Jun-13 21:21:59

I'm guessing it's either. Random number picked by a bored teenager or a wrong number.

If your feeling is there are no problems, let it go.

qazxc Thu 27-Jun-13 21:23:27

DP was narked off and told me he responded with "how about telling him you're a dirty slapper and by the way you have the wrong number". which is rather unlikely rude and agressive of him but he told me he just saw red when he saw the text which i can't blame him for really, if i got that text i might send a rather strongly worded response. he got "no" as an answer (whatever that means)

bbcessex Thu 27-Jun-13 21:25:11

YABU to let it irk you this much.

It's a crap 'joke', sent by someone/some people who think it's hilarious - very probably after they've been on the happy juice.

Ignore it. It's worded in such a stupid way - if it were true, I doubt anyone would word that message in such a way.....

SolidGoldBrass Thu 27-Jun-13 21:25:47

This will be a childish joke on someone's part and best ignored. Having a great big strop about it and frantically trying to unmask the culprit will just give the culprit an even bigger laugh at your expense.

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts Thu 27-Jun-13 21:26:43

It sounds like the sort of thing some very immature friends might do as a joke. Unless you have actual reason to think there might be something to it, try not to dwell on it.

That said, a tiny part of me would be freaked out if DH got a text like that, despite having no reason at all to worry!

bbcessex Thu 27-Jun-13 21:27:23

wholeheartedly agree with SolidGoldBrass

Boomba Thu 27-Jun-13 21:27:56

why are you both so angry about it? confused

qazxc Thu 27-Jun-13 21:29:31

Yes it is best ignored and i plan to do that. it just hit a nerve and rather upset me because of my upbringing, easier to vent it out on MN than in RL IYKWIM.

sunshinesue Thu 27-Jun-13 21:29:46

I'm guessing the type of fella who gives a married woman an std is also likely to give out a random fake phone number. It just happend to be your dp's

buildingmycorestrength Thu 27-Jun-13 21:30:17

I'm afraid I can remember stupid boys from my teenage years finding that sort of 'joke' ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS. Not likely to be someone with a sinister or personal motive ... and I know which I'd rather it was.

(Um, I'd rather it was the random teenager. In case I wasn't clear.)

scaevola Thu 27-Jun-13 21:30:34

I think DH's reply was pretty damn good.

RiotsNotDiets Thu 27-Jun-13 21:30:35

But why is he so angry? Calling someone a 'dirty slapper' is vile and an overreaction considering it hasn't got him in any trouble.

lborolass Thu 27-Jun-13 21:30:59

I wouldn't give it a second thought, it's most likely to be a wrong number or an unfunny joke.

buildingmycorestrength Thu 27-Jun-13 21:32:23

Surely it is a teenager because grownups don't say 'an STD', they use the name of the specific problem, which they know because they are grown ups.

ImTooHecsyForYourParty Thu 27-Jun-13 21:33:08

Why was he so angry? Why did he 'see red'? What made him think that it was someone intentionally sending this to him as a joke rather than it simply being a wrong number?

Have his friends got a history of sending stupid texts like that?

If I got a text like that, from a number I didn't recognise, my response would be to either just delete it or to reply sorry, I think you have the wrong number. I wouldn't 'see red' and type something so nasty. What if it was genuinely a wrong number? Did the person deserve that reply just for typing in a number incorrectly?

Boomba Thu 27-Jun-13 21:37:16

I agree hecsy
odd reaction

Jengnr Thu 27-Jun-13 21:41:44

I don't think it's odd. That's the kind of text that would have people on here shouting LTB if the OP had been phrased differently.

Shit joke or not if someone did something that could potentially wreck my marriage I'd be fucking livid too.

He's wrong about the 'dirty slapper' thing though. Not nice.

WorraLiberty Thu 27-Jun-13 21:57:07

It's probably a bunch of kids sending texts to random, made up numbers and they happened to send it to your DH.

However, the word 'slapper' is usually associated with women

Yet the text gives no clue as to the sex of the sender?
