AIBU?

Regarding my dog

I am sure I am nbu, but perhaps someone who isn't a doglover can give me some perspective on this.

This morning I was out walking ddog along with the dds. We met a mother and daughter coming the other way. I saw them coming, so called ddog back and put her on her lead (this is in rural woodland where you rarely meet others, I didn't have her off her lead in a busy park or anything).

When we reached each other the girl (who looked about 8 or 9 to me) asked if she could stroke ddog, I said yes (the mother was right there and aware of this). She had a stroke, and ddog licked her hand. The mother went ballistic, said I should not have let ddog lick her, and that I must have low hygiene standards!

So, was I out of order? Should I have prewarned them that stroking the dog would mean they were in licking range? Can other dog owners prevent their dogs licking people who are stroking them?

Before I get ripped apart (I've seen dog threads go badly before) I want to say I would have kept ddog away from them if they hadn't asked for the girl to stroke her. Also, the girl did not look remotely upset by being licked on the hand.

no you weren't out of order. i have a dog, though am not especially a dog-fan, so i'm quite objective about this :-)

YANBU and I don't even like dogs. I wouldn't go ballistic over a lick from a friendly dog, surely a wipe with a tissue and wash hands properly when you get home is alright?

She had stroked the dog (which could have been rolling in anything, based upon mine) but her mother was upset that the dog licked her???

She's a loon. When DS was about two a greyhound trotted up licked him on the forehead and went on his way. Personally I thought it was the funniest thing ever but the poor owner was mortified

YANBU.

I'm not sure how she could have reached adulthood without realising that dogs often lick people who are stroking them.

I feel sorry for the child.

Loon of a woman.

Disclaimer we don't have a dog but I've seen DS age 1 1/2 feed my mum's dog some of his ice cream then eat the rest. How's that for hygiene standards?! (I laughed)

Yanbu - if she had told her dd not to touch the dog then fair enough but she allowed the interaction.

Wow, I wasn't expecting everyone to say I was nbu.

Tbh, I probably do have low hygiene standards compared to some, but I thought it was rude to point out!

We have a cat & MIL has a dog. They are DD's "best" friends. She likes to lie in their baskets & MIL even caught her drinking out the dog's bowl with him. Maybe this woman would like to come to my house - she'd go into cardiac arrest! Sorry this happened to you OP, some people are overly sensitive when it comes to animals & children.

No you were a responsible dog owner, the woman is crazy. The only good thing is that she has clearly raised her kids to ask permission to pet a strange dog. But who on earth thinks its ok to pet a dog and then freaks out so completely when it licks their hand?! It's not even like it licked the child's face ( I let dogs kiss my face quite happily but understand some think its gross)

It's usually DS who does the licking, not the cat in our house, so YANBU.

The woman is nutter. Try to pay no attention to it. It will be a real joy for the poor child to grow up with a nutcase like her. Boy, would have made my blood boil if that had happened to me. Don't have much tolerance for stupidity
