I'm single and in my late forties. 3 teenagers starting to fly the nest but it'll be a few years yet. Staring to think I need to get a Plan or I'll be miserable when they go. So far I've got:

  • see the Northern Lights

  • bathe in a natural hot spring

  • walk from Joan O'Groats to Land's End (not really sure about that one - might do Coast-to-Coast first!)

  • volunteer abroad for six months/a year

I also have lots of vague thoughts about accomplishments in my work life which I can't quite formulate into a goal.

I don't have one.

Is that odd?

My first thought when I saw your title was Iceland/ Northern Lights/ thermal springs - so you have excellent taste! Grin

I fancy sleeping in that ice hotel.

I would also like to buy a camper can and travel around the country for 12 months.

Get a red velvet ballgown.

Truly master my second and third languages.

Write a loooooong novel about Tajikistan.

Adopt a lovely little child, when we're more stable financially, to be a brother or sister to our little one (as can't give birth again).

Run 5k. I could be doing this in ten weeks' time... if I'd just stick to the sodding programme!

The other is to see Great White Sharks fom a shark cage......then I can die .....ooh hold on, may need to rethink that with the whole shark thing!

I really want to buy a piano. No space though, so a keyboard might have to do for now...

A fair few to be honest but one which I have thought about recently is spending a month living on one of those canal boats in Amsterdam.

Ooh city I hope it wasn't shod? Kicking in face is never nice Shock

I did Snowdon the other week, and also have Ben Nevis / Sca Fell on my list Smile

I want to event one of my horses amongst other things, like trying out loads of obscure horse sports.

And write a book. I have many half stories in my head. It'd be rubbish, and I wouldn't expect anyone to read it, but I'd like to write it.

Be at the front at a Bon Jovi concert (sad I know but I luffs them :) ) - can tick this one off as did this last weekend Grin

Go on a proper ranch holiday in America; living under the stars, driving cattle etc. My cousin and I are saving for this.

Write a novel and have it published. Working on this!

Have my own horses again.

Run my own business, preferably a little coffee shop or a nice little B&B.

Learn to sew well enough to make myself proper dresses etc. Can currently do passable alterations and make bags!

One day not have to work 3 jobs over 7 days to make ends meet and actually spend some time with my son :(

DeckSwabber · 16/06/2013 17:17

I'd also love to have my own horse, but its been a long time since I have ridden confidently enough for that.

The ranch holiday sounds good too.

Northern lights

Visit Antarctica. Actually I'd rather live and work there for a few weeks/months, not keen on the trooping off the cruise ship for an hour to photograph penguins thing. But by the time the children are old enough I'll be ancient. Would also miss them and DH.

Go on holiday with the children to Greece.

Y, always loved the idea of a ranch holiday.

Iceland is amazing! That is a must for the Northern Lights and hot springs.

Visit every state in the USA, preferably driving it (I can tick off 6 so far!)

Everything I want to do I cant because there is a civil war, or they don't like westerners much or its prone to terrorism and kidnapping >sigh<

I binned the idea of Machu Picchu on the grounds I was far to old and unfit to go mountain climbing - only to find it's coach tours all the way now - I don't think I'll bother. Rio least said really - you cant go out of bounds like most of South America its utterly lawless once you stray into ghettos. Chile is great, I do like Chile and they like the English which is always a bonus.

Luxor and the Pyramids well I can do without all that shooting and kidnapping Jordan that would be OK and the Holy lands bombs flying about Jerusalem much the same Ethiopia and the origins of the Coptic Church Don't think I could deal with the poverty TBH. harsh but true.

Easter island - not a lot there, you just do a day trip and say 'I've seen some statues' - Pitcairn dare I say it - just google the news links, bit in bred and they don't like outsiders, not even day trippers. Galapagos - but that a day tripper thing now too

Done the whole Antarctic thing years ago, my father was posted down there for many seasons (1946-1952) and my mother did a season after they were married on South Georgia. The place is heaving with rich American tourists now.

That leaves me wandering round Italy and Greece for ancient civilisations. Whats left of the Byzantine Empire - full of unrest and uprisings. Hong Kong maybe on a tick list but I get the feeling its the sort of place you get to and want to leave immediately..

Not a lot left really that's off the beaten track.
