Perhaps 1987, when this book was first published, was a more innocent age. I have put photos of the book on my profile. I was a bit shock when I saw the cover and then it got worse. Am I just be thinking too much into this?

It was the king wanting a big pink worm in his hole that made me crack - I had kept an open mind until that point despite all the pictures of him bending over.

"I must put something in the hole" said the king

I'll put a rabbit down the hole.

I actually laughed out loud at that, excellent!

I think you should speak to the teacher or perhaps escalate it to the head. That will give them something to talk about in the staff room!

I just read on another thread a Roald Dahl poem about a woman who wished she'd called one of her sons Soggy Muff instead of Dave, but I guess it must just be my filthy mind...

We have these at our school. The blue level books are a collection of the most awful stories I've ever been unfortunate enough to listen to.
Load of rubbish.

I think kids' authors do this deliberately to see what they can get away with. When she was little, DD had a counting book where there were certain numbers of items for a party (one cake, eight chairs, that kind of thing). One of them items was "two big jugs". We were pretty sure that wasn't there by accident. smile

I only got as far as "He had a big brown rabbit in his big brown hole"

Lots of books have hidden innuendos.
Its hard sometimes, trying to read stories with innuendos, and trying to keep a straight face.

We once had a book with 'and the man and the woman played in the shower and then they snuggled in bed all night long' and I thought hmm

<Perhaps 1987, when this book was first published, was a more innocent age> Hahaha! grin That was only a few years ago, I was 17 then. And I can assure you it wasn't a more innocent age grin
