AIBU?

To ban dp from bringing anymore cd's/dvd's home?

DP is a bit of a hoarder. Especially when it comes to his precious dvd's and cd's. He calls them his "collections". He has hundreds, and on average, brings a new one home every fortnight. We live in a small flat with virtually no storage and so his cd and DVD collection is taking over our home and making it look untidy to me. I feel so sick of the damn things and have told dp to but some of the plastic storage containers that you can stack to put them in, least then they'll look a bit more presentable than stacked under the stairs or in cardboard boxes as he has them now but he hasn't bought them yet, but there's no way I'm paying a tenner for them for his shit, and then not getting my
Money back from him! So, wibu to enforce a ban on him buying any more cd's/d-vd's?

How do you intend to enforce a ban?

Get an android TV or Apple TV that you can watch Netflix and stuff like that on. If he sells his collection it'll pay for it.

I'm also interested in how you'll enforce this ban?

How do you 'ban' another adult from doing something?

Buying a CD/DVD once a fortnight is hardly an obsession, I buy at least one CD a week.

It might be a generational thing but Spotify/mp3s/Netflix seems like a con-trick, why would you pay for something that doesn't physically exist?

Personally, Spotify and Lovefilm are your way forward. You can listen to and watch whatever you want, when you want and for a fraction of the price of buying new.

I would never buy a CD or DVD now.

Depends if you're a big movie watcher. Anything more than 2 movies watched a month (rather than buying DVDs) and I reckon you're ahead of the game. I have insomnia so watch maybe 10 plus a week - thereby probably really screwing up their sales projections. I find that gratifying.

You are being totally unreasonable to "ban" your DP from buying DVDs, CDs or anything else.

He's an adult and is entitled to decide for himself what he does or doesn't buy, providing his doing so does not impact on family finances.

You are not being unreasonable asking him to store the DVDs and CDs in a tidy manner.

Yabu. I'm sure the op"s dp knows about Netflix, Spotify etc. Not everything you might want to watch or listen to is available on them and its unlikely her dp will want to sell his collection. Sometimes things get taken off Netflix so its no guarantee.

my dh could have posted that post but it would be about my books and dvd's Grin

we live in a house so have more room than you... but there is no way he could ban me from buying anything (unless its something really unreasonable or expensive). ive cut down, yes, but banning me? oh no! never gonna happen. i do have storage though

can you not get him to buy storage from the net? if you find some and set it all up for him, you can then get him to put his details in. hassle i know but at least it would be getting sorted

I keep my cd's in the fold out boxes (hold about 25) they come in lots of colours, the red ones are stacked up down the side of a chair and are inobtrusive.

I bought OH a plastic box that I think holds 50, they are stackable, stronger but dont look as nice as the cardboard ones.

Non of them were as much as a tenner

DH has at a rough estimate round about 10,000 cd's (singles and albums). We have a garage thankfully and he's sorting them out to sell now as he is downloading them slowly onto his computer.
Can't you tempt him into selling some and buying a treat with the profits?

YABVU
I have over 600 dvds atm. I was running out of space too so went on ebay and got cases for them for 5 quid.
I got rid of all the cases and put the disks in so now they take up approx 30cm by 30cm space, for all 600.

Dh is the same with his books. They come into the house but never leave (even ones that his mother has passed on.and are really trashy fiction). He keeps telling me that some of them are collectors items - Will maybe if he had pristine first editions but these are well thumbed, coffee stained paperbacks!!

Can you agree on a "one-in, one-out" approach. I just took a heap of DVDs to Blockbuster and got credit for them.
You do need to have real heart-to-heart with him and explain how the hoarding/clutter makes you feel.
Get him to think of all the money he could save on storage alone if he just frees himself of the clutter. I'm moving soon and losing a built in bookcase so that thought motivated me to take nearly all my books to the charity shop yesterday!
I think YANBU in your feelings, though it's got to be said enough times to him until it comes from him. He needs to really understand this making you feel unhappy, and his actions will tell you whether you, or the "collection" are more important.

DH is exactly the same, except he also collects vinyl and books as well. I couldn't ban him any more than DH could stop me from buying new clothes Grin

I try to be tolerant. He has built lots of shelving in the alcoves to store it all.

YABU but I feel your pain!! DH is very similar - still has cassettes and videos even though our video player is not connected/plugged in!

Thanks to my kindle, smart tv and mp3 I am happily CD and dvd free. Well never be book free, don't want to be, but don't buy a paperback a week anymore.

It's the future.

We sold/binned all our DVDs and CDs after storing them on the computer.

We keep our dvds in folders and ditched the boxes too. Takes up much less space. DH won't do the same with his videogames, so we're drowning in the bloody things. I think he thinks that they're decorative.

YABabitU to 'ban' him, he's an adult not a child after all. However I would struggle to live with that. There are no DVDs or CDs in our house, and never will there be!!

Can I just bring a Dvd in OP? Grin. No, seriously, I agree with you, once you've watched them they're just junk. I only have a few that are my favourite films i.e. E.T. (love him Grin), Titanic etc. I'm wanting one of those t.v. cabinets with a drawer in.....my dream

My dh is the same, they are in shelves and in dvd albums. Plus he has a large vinyl collection, several soundboards, guitars, amps. I have nothing against his hobby, but we have a small little home. He is on vacation soon and moving all his collection into the spare room and making it a music room. Can't even use the fireplace as he has too much stuff around it.
Can't wait, I hate the clutter his music has created. It is so discouraging. Good luck OP.
