Next door have been having a little BBQ/party tonight, with lots of kids present. Noisyish all evening, no problem at all.

But it's 10.30pm now, and the kids are shrieking and screaming like banshees, and have been for the last half hour.

AIBU to lean out of the window and tell them to stop bloody shrieking?

I wouldn't mind party noise until much later if its only an occasional event, but I absolutely can't stand shrieking at any time of the day or night, so YANBU.

We've got a loud birthday party next door (21 year old I think) with what can only be described as football chanting going on all evening. I'm hoping they'll zip it at 11 (they're normally good like that)

The crying hysterically is probably the 'come down ' from lots of running , jumping , squealing, endless fruit juice etc

To be fair, I know most of the kids there well and they know that I am utterly unable to tolerate shrieking and screeching under any circumstances. I did tell them that playing = good, just no screeching.

Am feeling a bit now - tis silent next door except for the crying.

Music wouldn't have bothered me at all, loud voices not at all. Just overtired hysterical screaming bothers me A LOT.

You haven't done anything wrong - the parents were in the wrong for not stopping the shrieking!! Party noise is fine occasionally, shrieking is not 'fine' any time of day or night, but especially night.

Chipping I would, but there's no sound except distant sobs, still!
I'm in the guilt phase of the anger-guilt cycle that DH observantly points out that I constantly indulge in. He's also pointed out that he can still hear kids playing in the garden, just quietly, and that it's probably one child who fell over or something who's been crying.

Holly it's been windy and chilly but dry, and they have a nice sheltered pergola thing to sit under, so serviceable BBQ conditions here in the SE.

Holly it wouldn't have been a day I'd have chosen for a BBQ, but I guess they'd planned it beforehand so had to press on. It's not much of a summer so far, is it!

One little girl (about 4yrs old) in the supermarket was talking to her Mum & her Mum must have said something about it being summer and the little one said ' is it meant to be summer now ????????' with that 'who you kiddin' look on her face

The wind has dropped and so has the noise - it's silent as the grave next door and I feel dreadfully guilty! I don't mind party noise, just screaming!

I should have just prayed for rain instead; that would have chased them inside.

As a footnote, I just spoke to one of the children and she says that noone minded me telling them to quieten down, and that the screaming child had fallen over and banged his head.

I can stop feeling guilty now.
