To think FB can be bloody brilliant!

Fed up with all the smug, snidey posts about people who use Fb as though it makes you superior if you don't use it.

This morning just had a great conversation from some friends and family from Australia, Asia and Far flung Part of UK all on the one thread and over a few minutes. Makes you feel we were all very close by and not thousands of miles away. Means I can keep in touch so easy and still be a small part of their lives and see what their kids are up to with pics etc. I can share interesting articles with them and share jokes.

So AIBU in thinking that FB can be bloody great as long as you or your friends aren't knobs? Maybe I am a knob (before someone jumps in), but in my mind I'm rather lovely and possibly deluded of course!

It's bloody marvellous. Has been a useful tool for integrating me into a rural community in a foreign country. Also can buy and sell and swap stuff for free. People who complain about it generally dont know how to use it properly.

YANBU, if FB irritated me as much as it does some people I just wouldn't use it.

OP, have you thought about opening a FB group for your family members? It's quite easy to do and it means you all get to 'share a wall' and add pics/links/comments etc.

Sometimes it's easier than adding lots of tags and being concerned over other people's privacy settings. You can also make the group secret should you wish only members can see what's posted.

YANBU - if it wasn't for Facebook I would not have got back in contact with a really dear friend of mine (we are like family), I hadn't seen him in nearly 6 years. I felt like part of me was missing.
Then I saw his cousin pop up on a friends post, looked through his contacts and found my friend again.
And we are both so glad I hunted him down. We now have such a great relationship, and even better his partner is fabulous! Without facebook I wouldn't have either of them in my life. I am so lucky to have them!

And yes, as in everyday life, some people are boring/show offs/repetitive. But unlike real life I can just hide them from my news feed!

chrome100 Fri 14-Jun-13 19:33:44

I think it's great, I have so many more friends BECAUSE of it. If I meet someone in real life that I hit it off with, I befriend them on Facebook and keep in touch with them, invite them to stuff and lo and behold a friendship is born. Otherwise I'd never see them again. I think if you use it well it's a great tool. I have made tons of friends over the past few years this way.

Ah, I just this minute found out my cousin's baby has arrived! I love FB. I haven't seen him for years but it's lovely to keep in touch and be up to date on his fab news! smile

With the help of Facebook, Google maps and an address from an old envelope, I found the Italian penfriend of my teenage years who I had lost touch with. We chat every so often, share photos and I know more about her now that I did when I was a teen. So YNBU.

DomesticCEO Fri 14-Jun-13 16:41:24

Oh and I think it can be an age thing too - I'd bloody hate to be a teenager with an FB account but I'm 41 and way past all that angst grin.

DomesticCEO Fri 14-Jun-13 16:40:50

You're right White grin - yes I do have a couple of acquaintances who are guilty of stealth boasts now and again but I just laugh it off and don't worry about it.

Equally, I post hundreds of photos of my kids because I mainly use it as a way of sharing pics with family and friends quickly and easily - I'm sure some of my friends get sick of the sight of my kids but they can easily hide me and I'd be none the wiser smile.

Some people have too much spare time on their hands to worry about things that don't matter!

It's also useful if you need local info. Nurseries / tradesmen / activities etc.

And I'm a saddo who likes nosing through other peoples holiday snaps.

Thanks Whitesnake for restoring my faith in MN. Thought I had wandered onto some parrallel Mn universe this morning.

WhiteShakette Fri 14-Jun-13 10:01:53

I don't use it, and never have, but I have to say that the sheer amount of FB-related threads on here (people bullying via FB, irritation at people's boasting re school reports, stealing FB photographs of children without permission, ostentatiously excluding people from social events via FB, posting ignorant, racist drivel etc etc) makes me think it is more trouble than it's worth. But presumably this is like MIL threads, which are disproportionately negative, because those who are happy with their rel with their MIL don't need to post about it.

MerryMarigold Fri 14-Jun-13 09:58:51

Unanimously positive on FB AND on AIBU. It is a first!

BegoniaBampot Fri 14-Jun-13 09:42:21

Cripes! A totally unanimous verdict regarding FB - that must be a first for Mn! Just give it time...

ProfYaffle Fri 14-Jun-13 09:20:31

"FB can be bloody great as long as you or your friends aren't knobs?"

^^ This! I'm friends with people that I like and enjoy hearing from, ergo, FB is great for me.

DomesticCEO Fri 14-Jun-13 09:18:14

Betty, I had to delete candy crush cos got soooo addicted!

DomesticCEO Fri 14-Jun-13 09:17:39

YANBU. The FB snob threads always make me laugh!

I never see any awful stuff on FB - must have lots of lovely friends smile.

YANBU - I love FB and think it is brilliant IF people use it properly.

You gotta love candy crush too smile

MrsMagpieCovetsShinyThings Fri 14-Jun-13 09:13:21

I love it as I have found 3 great people who make crafts and sell them on their Facebook pages. Its brilliant that I can get a handmade bag done as a present, in fabric I've picked etc. So its good for businesses and for catching up. smile

EagleRiderDirk Fri 14-Jun-13 09:12:15

YANBU - I love facebook as it allows me to connect easily with far flung friends and family. I just defriend the people who want to use it nastily including my own family

thebody Fri 14-Jun-13 09:11:36

You are right of course. FB is a tool to use or abuse just like any technology.

Mintyy Fri 14-Jun-13 09:11:00

I agree. Get more pleasure from facebook than frustration/irritation. But then I am friends with only a small number of lovely people and the ones who annoy me slightly but I don't want to defriend? ... I just hide em.

Can't see the problem!

MerryMarigold Fri 14-Jun-13 09:09:16

I've always loved it.

I know there are FB snobs out there. There will always be a snob of something.

I am a bbq snob. Hate gas ones (no flavour). Charcoal all the way for me!
