AIBU?

to be perturbed at onesie bashing

I feel like the onesie bashing is out of line for many reasons.

we are encouraged to have freedom of expression over our clothing. If we replace the word onesie with 'shorts' or 'bra-top' then people would say, 'hey, you can't tell women what to wear'

calling anyones choice of clothing 'disgusting' is unacceptable

underwear as outerwear has been going on for yonks.

Are we so bound by the unofficial rules of society that we are afraid to be different? Should we not celebrate differences, even if they are not to our personal taste?

I resent the insinuation that those who wear onesies outside their home are 'lazy' or 'couldn't be bothered' to put 'proper' clothes on.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this is a sideways way of snobby sneering at people who are perceived to be common and I'm not okay with that

Not in my world it hasn't.

Nope, I can categorically say, I've never gone out with my knickers over my trousers, a'la'Superman style.

I think it's more than reasonable to point and laugh at an adult who is wearing a zippable all in one tiger oufit made from the finest of man made fibres.

YY to this.

I just don't see the need to wear pyjamas outside, I'm more than happy to wear my onesie indoors (a lot) but why would I want to look like George Dawes in public? Hmm Grin

You wear onsies outside of the home, don't you OP?

Personally, I think it's a stupid idea and that people who do look ridiculous. Not my problem if they want to wear them though.

and I always imagine them to be slightly damp and sweaty from lounging around on a sofa in them, then your going to go out because you really can't be arsed to put a pair of jeans and a tshirt on? Yeuch.

I'm not one to criticise what people wear but I will admit to being quite bemused on a camping trip last weekend by the number of people dressed in onesies that make them look like farm animals. They even had tails. I just don't get it.

It's not about being afraid to be different. It's that it looks crap. It's no different to going out in a nightie covered in cupcakes and teddy bears and a dressing gown. Which actually, I haven't seen happening for years.

If I saw someone going out in a negligé, I'd think they were odd and couldn't be bothered to put on proper clothes. I think the same when I see someone go out in a onesie.

Nothing to do with snobbery, everything to do with normality.

I've never wore one and don't have friends who do but when I see folk out in them I tend to just smile - it's not doing me any harm. I'd rather see a onesie than half a boob or an arse crack any day Wink

As an avid Onesie wearer in the privacy of my own home, I have to agree that wearing one out in public is just not on. It's not appropriate.

The person wearing them will get judged.
Unless a majority are wearing something, like a suit, people judge peoples' clothes.
You are not going to be able to stop that.

Of course people can wear what they want, but if you get an adult prancing about in what is basically a giant babygro, you're going to find that some other people are going to have an opinion about it! Grin

Since it is the matter of a few seconds to throw on some actual clothes, you can't help but wonder what is it that people who choose to go out dressed like a baby or dressed in their nightwear are trying to get people to think about them? rebel? too cute for words? too busy to dress? can't be arsed?

There's clearly a purpose to dressing like a baby or not getting dressed at all Grin because to choose to do something that is outside of what is normally expected is always done with purpose. I just can't work out what it is.

People have had opinions re fashion FOREVER - if they didn't then it wouldn't be fashion, we would all be wearing sacks, and you'd have no onesie to be dissed for wearing.

Wear what you want and like & enjoy. Why do you pay attention to critics of them? If you like them you like them & what other people say doesn't matter.

Of course people who make statements like "if you wear X you are therefore Y" are judgemental fools. Why pay attention to them?

They don't look nice. I saw someone dressed in one in town the other day. She looked like she had just crawled out of bed. Adults wearing oversized babygrows look odd. People have the freedom to wear what they want, but other people also have the freedom to an opinion. If it helps, I think grown men with the top of their jeans underneath their pants look pretty dumb too.

A onesie outdoors is not really style and beauty is it?

I think people tottering around wearing high heels look ridiculous and must be stupid for choosing such ridiculous items to walk totter in (you can't really call it walking). Wincing with every step is so not a good look not matter how high or "pretty" (ahem) your shoes are.

Then, in the midst of all my (mostly internal) tutting and eye rolling I suddenly get overwhelmed with respect for anyone who can go about their day in pain and discomfort, simply because they think they look good.

I don't think these women actually give a damn what I think though do they? Nor would I expect them to.

I don't own a onesie, but if I did, I would probably end up wearing it outside. Sometimes if dc's are away for the evening I'll go and watch a film round at my friends house - she'll be in her pyjamas and I will go round in mine. I object to people judging so horribly and vehemently. Like it actually causes harm to them. Fine if you don't get it, but why be so scathing? And the assumption that they are dirty? How do you know that they didn't put it on fresh from the clean laundry? I've sat next to a guy in a smelly pikachoo onesie during a cinema cult all nighter. He stank, but I suspect that he would have stank in ordinary clothes, because he was filthy and sweaty from sitting in a stuffy cinema for 24 hours.

when I was 18 I had a blue blouse with a tie neck, my dad had a pair of pyjamas in exactly the same shade... I borrowed the bottoms and wore them with a big belt round my waist so it looked like the 'flying suits ' that were fashionable at the time (80's) totally irrelevant to this thread but the whole wearing your PJ's out reminded me Smile

When wearing my onesie I have been tempted to nip out to the corner shop in it, but wouldn't because I look stupid in it.
I definitely wouldn't wear it to the cinema, I'd bake for one thing.
It's my fuel economy Scottish winter outfit.
