So I'm packing my shopping on one of the longer examples of the genre...lots of space for bags etc, when:

"unexpected item in bagging area"

jiggle the bags a bit

"unexpected item in bagging area"

take out last item and look at the screen to check it went through..yep fine

"unexpected item in bagging area"

pick up whole bag and put it down again

"unexpected item in bagging area"

notice DD's teddy sitting next to the bag...big sigh and hand teddy back to DD....who is also sitting next to the bag.

"unexpected item in bagging area"

FACE PALM - Pick DD up off the bagging area and back onto her feet.

AIBU to suggest that "Not entirely unexpected toddler in bagging area" would have been more useful a message?

I mean if the weight suddenly jumps up by more than 12 kg that's what it will be right?

I hate those tills with a passion. I work on checkouts and my managers are forever asking me to train on them...no way!

You're lucky there wasn't a BOGOF that day...you might have left the store with two toddlers Grin

I refuse to use them.

The last time I used one I ended stood swearing at it. I threatened to use violence if it didn't behave. I hate them. They are very shit at their job

I want a really sarcastic one. That after the third unexpected item in the bagging area snarls 'Oh FFS STOP PISSING AROUND' and throws a strop after the fifth unexpected item in the bagging area and refuses to do anything else.

You're right. I terrified myself when I typed that Grin

There was an unexpected item in the bagging area at my local Tesco this morning. It was a helpful member of staff....

DS or DD are always the unexpected item!

My son's hand as he leans is usually my unexpected item.

Worra that was just evil!

I would like them to tell me what the item is. It's on a par of irritation with facebook on my phone telling me it has an 'unexpected error' every time I log in!

Ooh,I love these tills.Dash in and out without any silly chit chat to checkout assistants.Sorry, but I think I must be an unsociable git really.

I quite like using them and I learnt something new about the Asda ones this weekend.

When you have loads of stuff and you can't fit it on the scale, you can take it off once the lights at the bottom of the machine change from red to green. This means it has weighed and registered it and you can transfer it to another bag/the floor if necessary.

In my local sainsbury's the self service tills won't let you put the healthy start vouchers through because the £3.10 too large for a customer to scan in themselves. (We must be a right dodgy shower where I live!).
I normally have to tell the assistant how to scan them in!
I love them by the way. One good thing about them is, when you scan your news paper, the machine doesn't read the front page for two minutes... Which is what happens in the local shop!

I love self serve tills.

I work in a place that has recently installed self serve, and people are not happy about them. Customers keep moaning to me about them, and trying to get me to admit that I hate them - but I don't!

IN fact one woman pushed me too far and questioned me on why I used them. My answer may have been a tad cheeky... 'I have to be chirpy, chatty and friendly in here all day. It's the last thing I want to do when I'm on my own time'

hmmm I mostly love them...except the messages....

I mean they could just add in the odd random message just to cheer people up.

or even a tune...instead of boring 'beep'...'beep'...'beep' why not a 'biddleybidleybeep' or 'bioioioing'

okay it turns out this is not an easy concept to get across in text....
