I've been really upset and angry all day about an article about rape pages being set up on facebook. Dh thinks cultural tide is turning and consent is a bigger issue than ever in the past but I can't help thinking this isn't the case, and feel violent sexual misogyny a real and present danger. Feel burning fury about this. Surely facebook should take these pages down and police be involved?? Would I be being rational if I wasn't furious??

Footface Mon 27-May-13 16:12:35

If they are what I think they are, then no yanbu. And the bastards who have used them should go to prison. The Internet is not annoymous and people should be accountable for what they look for and post

Footface Mon 27-May-13 16:15:01

Also I don't agree with your dp, sexual assault is rising

What are they? I'm naive and really don't want to google.

BasilBabyEater Mon 27-May-13 16:23:16

No you're not being unreasonable.

What can you do about it?

Take screen shots of the pages and tweet them on the #fbrape hashtag demanding that the advertisers on that page put pressure on FB to take the pages down. Others will re-tweet so the advertisers get inundated by people who associate their brands with DV and rape.

I think there is truth in both your opinions. There is a present, obvious, violent misogyny that is allowed to run riot over the internet. However, more men are standing up and being counted. There are YouTube videos and internet posts from men fighting against these concepts too. And, lest we forget, rape within marriage was legal until recently.

YANBU that these pages should be taken down and their authors prosecuted.

Curiosity the link I read was from a new statesman article but I couldn't read more than the first para.thanks for twitter tip. What else can I do to channel the rage positively

quoteunquote Mon 27-May-13 16:54:46

Well when you have sick Nick Ross, the presenter of crime watch, telling everyone rape Ok but only if you do a certain way,

Then FB rape pages seem quite normal, just the way that sexual assault is being normalised.

any links?

GoodbyePorkPie Mon 27-May-13 17:32:15

What Basil said.

Have a read of this Guardian piece about fighting misogyny on Facebook by targetting advertisers.

Tailtwister Mon 27-May-13 17:49:40

What on earth are 'rape pages'? Sounds horrendous.

sweettooth99 Mon 27-May-13 18:09:47

Sorry I'm such a luddite I can't work out how to paste the link on my phone, but the article is by Jane fae in the new statesman, first article if you do #fbrape on Twitter. remaining outraged!

OddBoots Mon 27-May-13 18:13:20

The images themselves are horrific so instead of directly linking I can link here to the Women Action Media example page which you can click through if you feel able to see them.

Tailtwister Mon 27-May-13 18:18:35

OMG, who the hell posts stuff like that! I'm sorry to sound so naive, but I'm speechless. This stuff is allowed on Facebook but they won't show women breastfeeding their babies?

extracrunchy Mon 27-May-13 18:22:15

You're absolutely right - it's disgusting. I'm pretty sure I saw a petition about exactly this a couple of days ago. Will track it down.

Thumbtack Mon 27-May-13 18:23:16

May I ask if the pictures are real or do models pose for them? Sorry if I seem naive.

Can't get my head around it.

Thumbtack Mon 27-May-13 18:25:56

Just want to clarify that I think the pictures are completely unacceptable either way.

Is society becoming desensitised, do you think?

extracrunchy Mon 27-May-13 18:26:06

I hope they're models - but either way it's extremely destructive.

There's an article with details re a Twitter campaign here:

extracrunchy Mon 27-May-13 18:26:44

(I don't know how to do the linky thing - please can someone help?)

SarahAndFuck Mon 27-May-13 18:30:29

extracrunchys working link

Which I haven't looked at.

SarahAndFuck Mon 27-May-13 18:32:59

Extracrunchy You put [[ http://m.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/may/23/facebook-violently-sexist-pages-twitter-fbrape?CMP=twt_gu ]] around the thing you want to link but without without the spaces between the brackets and the text.

CuttedUpPear Mon 27-May-13 18:35:10

I started a thread on this a few days back

here it is and how to take action.

extracrunchy Mon 27-May-13 18:38:10

Thank you Sarah (also love the name)

Robinredboobs Mon 27-May-13 18:40:12

Sorry but can someone summarize what this is about without having to open a link? Thanks

extracrunchy Mon 27-May-13 18:43:17

True, every time someone opens the link the idiots who created the Facebook page get more hits.
It's basically jokes about rape with accompanying pictures of unconscious or otherwise vulnerable girls.
Facebook claims it's allowed in the name of free speech and good fun, and takes down tasteful pictures of breast feeding women because they're "pornographic".

OddBoots Mon 27-May-13 18:45:06

There are images depicting women injured in various ways with nasty and threatening often sexual slogans alongside them suggesting that woman should be treated violently. These images have been reported to FB but FB say they don't break their rules.
