Lads mags on display at buggy level.

I was in a motorway services with children including 2 year old DD recently and some lads mag with a provocatively nearly dressed and posed girl on the front were on display where all the kids could see.

Annoyed by this I put a couple of copies of Caravan owners monthly or similar mag in front of the offensive lads mag, problem solved.

I moved a paper in front of one of those shite ones with half naked girls on the front as I was in the shop with 6 kids ( aged 1-8) and the shopkeeper shouted at me. I gave him a death glare and he banned me from the shop! I wrote a letter to him and he sent me photos cut out if a porn mag back. Nice. I reported him to council and they said they were forwarding complaint on to another team. His shop closed down shortly after though could be for other reasons...

I watched a documentary about the position of these mags just before the initial shop incident and from memory they were supposed to be over 1.5moff the ground. The doc had secret cameras filming to show that it was being ignored, even in places like wh smith.

If you google the issue there's loads of recent mums net threads and newspaper articles about it.

The woman leading the campaign (forget her name) was being co-interviewed by an ex editor of a 'lads mag' on BBC news this morning.

She did not come across very well at all.

My DP buys some crappy paper " for the sports coverage" which happens to have a page 3 girl. I've banned him from reading it anywhere but our bedroom and then it must go straight in the recycling. My DD saw it once and was reading all sorts of stuff that made me cringe.

If you take your children to any town centre high street on a sunny day they will see real life women dressed in pretty much the same way as the cover of one of those magazines. The photos are not topless, or naked. They are not going to harm your child.

A child is not going to see the difference between the cover of Nuts and the cover of WeightWatchers with a bikini clad woman on it.

I would be more concerned about the lurid headlines on the front of magazines such as Take a Break and Chat etc.. because when a child is old enough to read, and can read headlines such as "my uncles' 17 sick sex acts" or "gang raped by thugs", I find that much more inappropriate than a woman leaning over a car in her underwear.

squeakytoy, a lot off the photos are topless. If you google 'nuts magazine front cover', you will see that the majority of the photos are topless, with nipples covered by strand of hair/ fingers/ black tape.

I agree with squeakytoy I havent got a problem with lads mags being on show. I hate those 'nice ladies' magazines having stories plastered over the front page about swinging, rape and abuse.

Well, I've yet to be in a town centre where a topless woman is stood with one hand over her right nipple (her half-naked female friend is obligingly covering her left nipple for her) and she is tugging down the front of her bikini bottom. We obviously frequent different high streets, squeaky.

Hate these mags, hate The Sun (why is page 3 still acceptable to some??) and I hate the naked porny t-shirts on display in the windows of shops like Footasylum and Blue Nile. I also hate seeing these t-shirts being worn in the street and young boys sniggering at them.

It seems to be becoming more acceptable for what once would have only been on the top shelf to be pushed in our faces. Presumably because we are all becoming desensitised to provocative imagery.

I'd be less worried by toddler/buggy age kids tbh. They don't understand the difference between mummy naked and a random woman naked IME.

However, preteens/young teens - totally different story. I remember picking up a copy of the Sun on the train for the first time in year 7 (aged just 11) and the total shock and confusion I felt when I turned to p3. It was obvious that the aim was to tittilate adult men and it made me feel sick. Maybe I'd just been mollycoddled?

It's not women writing about their abuse that's the issue; it's the sensationalist 'journalism' surrounding the writing that's the issue.

And just because that's 'bad', it doesn't make lads' mags 'good'.

The thing I don't get is, it isn't just a pair of breasts, it's being provocative. That is why there is a difference between nude art and porn. Just like if you were some place and saw a woman walking around topless vs two fully clothed women rubbing each other all over. I certainly know which one I would rather my children see.

I think that any shop that puts magazaines at 'buggy level' is just asking for them to be picked off the shelf, scrunched, chewed and flinged back any.old.how... if it's a caravanner's monthly or a lads' mag, who cares?
