To have a small moan about friends/people who smoke...

I think I am being really anal and this is not a "Third World Problem" - BUT...

I smoke very occasionally when pissed drinking but a fair few of my friends smoke.

I don't let anyone smoke in my house as I don't smoke/I have DC and one of my DC has asthma. I ask my friends to go outside to smoke (or go in the shed if its raining).

So many of my friends stand outside my kitchen door smoking, letting the heat out and smoke drifting in making my house smell and then put their butts in my kitchen bin leaving it to stink like an ashtray.

What part of "outside" do people not understand - a lot of smokers seem really oblivious to how gross it is - The other day I used the cash machine after someone used it while they were smoking leaving a big smoke fog all over it - and it was really gross.

I am probably just tuning into a bitter miserable old witch as I get older and maybe since the smoking ban its seems less "usual" to be in a smoky environment - is it just me? Am I a smoking pendant?

Nah its me to but i have at times been a 40 a day smoker...got down to 15 &quit 4 months ago.

When you are a smoker, you don't notice. I don't smoke but DP does and I don't notice the smell anymore except for when he just lights up because it's always there.

My OH smokes and I really hate it - TBF he always cleans his teeth/uses mouthwash after he's had a fag and he goes into the shed (to smoke!).

He holds my hand after and makes my hand stink.

God I am beginning to sound like I have a real ishoo!

tell them to move, I smoke and to me going outside means going out and closing the door, if its summer I always move away from open windows and doors if I can, and I always put the butts in my packet and take them home know they stink

I think you need to define 'outdoors' to your friends. Standing in the doorway with the door open would piss me off too. I choose to not smoke because I don't want my body, clothes and house to stink of fags so I'm damned if I want anyone else doing it either!
I agree though that smokers just don't notice it so don't see the problem

My OH smokes and although he has cut down, goes outside and now takes off his top/jumper and put an outside one on he still sometimes smells. like you said op, you can smell it on the hands for a long time after. If I wince at the smell or move away/ask him to do something about it, although I try to be polite he does look hang dog sometimes.

He just didnt used to get how much the smell lingers. I've seen smokers who waft the smokeon seeing you approach and think thats enough to get rid of it

OP I get grumpy about it and hate nagging OH, and he does follow any suggestions I make

Its disgusting. What I really hate to is when you are out for a night out or whatever and people disappear from the table for a good 10 mins at least once an hour in wee groups. If I buggered off and left the table to do whatever I wanted then it would be considered rude but because you are smoking suddenly that's acceptable?

I was out two friends the other night and I was left sitting at the table for 15 minutes while they went and had a fag .

I used to date a guy who once went out for 4 fags while we were watching a film at the cinema.

My dh smokes, as i do on the odd occasion.we smoke outside,when friends come to visit if they hover in the door smoking i simply and politely say "would you mind if we went outside so we can close the door." Its your house your rules, so tell them!

YANBU. It's minging. DP smokes. He brings me a cup of tea last thing at night, but he has a fag before this, so when he hands me the cup it smells of smoke (only a few seconds but BLEUGH). It seems rather churlish of me to to complain when he's made it for me, but it's horrible. (If you hadn't already guessed I am am ex-smoker too.)

It's when they take a huge drag outside, chuck the butt, and then exhale all the smoke into your room/face/car/office/bus. I have never smoked, never even tried it at school. Both my parents died of smoking-related diseases. I cannot comprehend why anyone would want to spend their cash to smell this bad, and risk dying in absolute agony.

The OH of one of my friend smokes, he's really good at going into the garden, even when freezing and I give him an old gu pudding glass dish for his fag ends, which I then chuck out the next day.

You know what pisses me off? People who only smoke when drunk don't smoke who expect you to give out cigs when they decide it suits them to smoke.

YANBU, they probably either got thoughtless or believed that sine you smoked very rarely you wouldn't mind. Next time OP make sure you make it clear in advance, you shouldn't have to but especially when drink is involved some people get thoughtless. You could also get a flowerpot or something and put it in view outside and say to put the butts outside in it.

To those that get left for ten minutes in the pub when people go outside to have a fag, what are they supposed to do?
They can't smoke inside anymore (which is fine with me), are they supposed to spend all evening without smoking because you don't want to be left?

I don't know about unreasonable but it's horribly intolerant and rude to make your guests feel uncomfortable, really, just don't be friends with people if you find their habits so offensive that you become incapable of enjoying their company?
