Was I unreasonable to give 3yo DD a yogurt that was a week past its use by date?

I didn't realise till I'd given it to her that the date on it was the 13th. It looked fine, smelled fine, and tasted fine, so I just let her eat it. MIL looked a bit aghast though. WIBU?

No, it's ok! Generally yogurts can go for quite a bit longer than the sell by date. I've worked with chefs most of my working life and they will eat them a month out of date.

I am very relaxed about the use by on sealed yogurt, event with 2yo pfb. Yogurt lets you know when it doesn't want to be eaten anymore.

reminds me of when dd was about 3 and I had given her some yogurts in her packed lunch for nursery. She always used to eat leftovers in the car on the way home and one day ate her yogurts. When we got home there was a note in her lunch box from nursery saying 'we didn't give dd her yogurts today as they are out of date' by then she had eaten them all up but when I looked at the lids they were about 10 days out of date lol! She was absolutely fine

Dont worry about it. My son has had out of date yogurts a few times as I don't tend to read dates on food.

Sorry lasttango was that for me? IMO there is a window beyond use-by dates on things like yogurt, cheese, fruit & veg etc, even eggs sometimes, particularly if they are sealed and I'll use my eyes, nose and taste buds to test these. For me, there is no such window for fresh meat, cooked meat, fish etc, so I'll use or freeze (if appropriate) before it expires.

There's a balance between retailers'/manufacturers risk management policy and the one I apply to the stock rotation in my fridge.

A friend who works at Muller is regularly given loads of out of date yoghurts to take home, as apparently all their employees are! Personally I wouldn't give it a second thought but then I bloody love yoghurt and eat about three gallons a week, and wouldn't be out off unless it was bubbling and/or turned to cheese.

I've eaten yogurt over a month past the sell by date. IME it only goes bad if you open it and then leave it in the fridge for a while.

YANBU, but I'm surprised that it looked ok.

I find that by the use by date they've usually started to separate and go a bit watery.

If it looked and smelt ok then I'm sure that it was ok :)

I once went to a talk by a manager from Waitrose and remember him telling us all that yoghurts are fine after their date and that in fact he had eaten them up to six weeks after their best before date, so I am sure your DC will be fine.

I don't think DD has eaten in date yoghurt in all her 9 years. It is cultured 'soured' milk anyway so techinically already gone off. As long as there was no mould should be fine

Chewing I am in tears. "The greedy gobble gannet!" The worst of it is that I used to speak exactly like that when I was a child (though my mum fed us out of date everything....just cut the mould off)

I'm sure she'll be fine. Like the other posters have said: you'd be able to tell if it wasn't okay to eat.

DH found half a mouldy potato on the floor last night. Turned out 3yo DS found it in the garden (probably a leftover from my planting six weeks ago) and when asked why there was only half DS said it was because he ate it. So far no adverse affects....
