Can I LTB for this?

Have had a mad rush to get the car back on the road (it's been SORN'd for half a year) as I need dh to drive me somewhere public transport doesn't go on Friday.

It had the MOT today and it passed, and the plan was to tax it tomorrow at the post office. Then dh discovered you can order it online and started going on about how marvellous that is as he ordered it.

Then he realised it is unlikely to arrive in the post before Friday.

You should still be able to drive as there will be a record if you purchased online I think.

You can still drive I'm about 99% sure of it - Because if the police do a search on the car it will be registered as having tax (as long as it starts in may and not June) ...

But if I am wrong ... then yes LTB

You will only get caught if a policeman pulls you over, or notices your car does not have a disc... They can fine you for 'not displaying a valid tax disc' but I dont think the fine is as much and you can maybe plead ignorance... :-/

It may turn up in time though, they are very efficient with the online stuff now. So fingers crossed

You can drive it, you get 2 week leeway when renewing anyway. There will be a record of your car being taxed.

Put a note on the dashboard just in case tho

yes you can do that. So long as they have a record that you've done it online(which they will have) its fine if you don't physically have the disk in.

He's not an idiot. You get seven days (I think it's seven) grace when you order online, so the dvla aren't going to go batshit about the correct disk not being displayed.

I can guarantee you will be able to drive as long as its ordered, should you be unfortunate to be stopped by the police make sure you have your paperwork as proof as an extra precaution - although the computer system will show you have valid tax. you can be prosecuted for not displaying a tax disc even if you have bought it but you legally get 5 days after your tax is due to give you time to display the tax disc, if that makes sense!!!

I thought the grace period was only for when the old disc expired, the car has no disc at all has it has been SORN since the beginning of the year.

From the tax disc faqs:

"I have not received the tax disc. Can I use the vehicle without the tax disc displayed?

When you apply for a tax disc online or by using DVLA's phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 5 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives."

The vehicle is taxed, it will show up on computers as taxed so you are fine.

The council won't do anything about the car, but I don't know what the dvla position is with a car that has gone from being sorn to taxed, but not displaying a tax disc. My gut says it would be overlooked, but technically I suppose they would be able to fine. It does seem odd that they treat a car not displaying a tax disc but actually being taxed differently if it was previously sorn....

As long as its ordered its fine (get DH to print off a copy of the receipt to keep in the car in case you get stopped). But there is no 'grace period' or 'leeway' given when it runs out, that's a complete urban myth.i was told by a friend who is a traffic PC that people believing that is one of their biggest problems. Same with MOTs. When it's gone, it's gone.

There is a grace period mini! You may want to check the facts. It's to do with displaying the disc. You can legally drive the car after the tax disc has expired if you have ordered the new one.

You may have meant this, but your post wasn't clear, and I wouldn't want the OP to get confused.

It is fine. We SORN'd the car and then drove without the new tax disc once we taxed it again. You get 5 days to drive from the day of ordering it to display it.

Nope, it's fine to drive. If you do get stopped at all you just explain the situation. The tax office can confirm that yes you have applied, and paid, and the paper disc is in the post. Hth

you should be absolutely fine BUT - it is an offence to not display a tax disc - I asked when renewing mine on the phone as I knew it wouldn't arrive in time.

I have previously asked a police officer if i can drive my car while the tax disc is in the post. The reply was everything is digital nowadays so you will not flash up on the ANPR and if you are routinely stopped, a quick check will show you have paid your road tax

You can drive it. So long as it's ordered, you have 2 weeks "leeway" to drive it without the disc displayed learnt this when I forgot to renew my tax disc in February

What bananananacoconuts said, a copper would have to be highly pissed off with you to do you for failure to display when there it can be proven tax has been paid. Vehicle stops are few and far between with ANPR.
