To be freaked out by creepy music box in dead SILs room?

My husband and I live in his deceased apartment. She died 6 years ago. Her old bedroom is the general 'nursery', though baby who is 11 weeks old sleeps in our room. I put the baby in the stroller in the nursery as we are about to go out to do laundry. I went to gather his sheets from our bedroom and when I came back there was my SILs childhood music box playing, (from where, I can't find). It's like the creepiest horror movie ever. I'm on my own in the apartment. I don't believe in ghosts, am not religious and am not spiritual. Funnily enough, I'm exactly like SIL when she was alive. AIBU to be utterly freaked out by this?

If you can't find it how do you know it's her music box?

Do your neighbours have kids? Could be coming through the walls/ceiling/floor

I try to tell myself that Hollywood horror movies have a lot to answer for and imagination is a powerful tool but I have to be honest, in this situation I would be sat in a circle of salt, clutching baby and rocking until DP came back to save me! wimp How spooky!

On the other hand perhaps a lovely message to your newborn from your dearly departed rattles off a few hail Mary's just in case

I wouldn't be that creeped out but it depends really- how does it operate? Has it set itself off before? Have you been reading the other Spooky Thread?!
I would be creeped out mind you if it was a windup mechanism that needs force and you heard it playing for a while. I have one of these from when I was a child and it wouldn't start accidentally

My grandma had an old wind-up music box and a slight jolt would set it off. She had it sitting on her dressing-table and it would just go off if you opened a drawer in the dressing-table, or pulled the chair out too hard, or so on.

Or you could see it as a lovely message from your DSiL to the baby...

Yeds it is freaky, especially if you have never experienced anything like it before (and have a small baby with you!!

Talk to the room, tell her you know she's there and your dc wll love the music and you will tell them all about her any happy memories shared etc.

I doubt very much that there is any harm meant.

My DS's musical snow globe (wind-up) sometimes plays spontaneously when there's a change in temperature. It doesn't freak me out, I assume its the creaky old mechanism.

However he does have an imaginary friend who lives on the ceiling above his head, at whom he smiles and waves when I put him to bed (he's 20 months). Well, he did have until recently - he stopped smiling and pointed angrily up, shaking his head and saying, "No!" etc. I made a big play of shooing the naughty friend away and then telling DS it had gone and everything was ok.

Stuff has started going missing around the flat too (seriously!).

But I don't believe in ghosts at all, I'm six months pg so maybe I'm losing stuff/forgetting where I've put stuff, and DS has a vivid imagination!

It's all in the interpretation

So was there the sound but no sighting of the music box? I'm presuming you have her old music box somewhere still in the apartment if you were able to identify the sound.

Perhaps like someone suggested - her way of marking your new arrival and letting you know she's watching over you all.

(my fatjher was a spiritulist healer (not sure how much I believe) when I first bought my home we were decorating and there was an incredibly strong smell of fresh mint in one particular area (amidst all the dust and plaster), so strong i asked my dad if he could smell it. He 'talked' to the room, it was an old lady who had lived here. He told her what we were doing and that we meant no harm. I have never experienced anything like it since but I always think my house gives happy house vibes if that makes sense.

Don't be frightened by this. Get rid of the music box - I'm sure those things often go off - I know my old jewellery box often did.

Every time this scares you just imagine how funny your SIL would be finding this right now!

How do you know it's your sils music box? Has anyone bought the baby one of those music books - I have a few that go off spontaneously. Usually those kind of music boxes/ wind up lullaby toys etc all have the same piece of music.

My beautiful DS died nearly 10 years ago in 2003 aged 13.He had CP and was blind, he just loved his musical toys. His favourite was a plastic piano that played crap tunes. When he died I kept it and no one was allowed to play with it.
Move forward to Jan 2013 I was having a mass clear out found piano said to DH I am going to dump this Stef would be rolling about laughing saying MUM I am 22!
I then threw the bloody thing in the bin and it started to play after 10 years. Guess what I kept it!

Ok, firstly do you have a baby monitor on in the room, if you are picking up someone else's monitor I.e from a neighbour, the sound of a musical mobile toy sounds exactly as you describe!

I don't have a baby monitor. So there's none of that. And this was a music box playing IN THE ROOM, because I heard it clear as a bell.

There is a loft area with some of her old toys up there.Maybe that's where it is. I know its her music box because it IS a dusty old one that plays the pas de deux from Swan Lake (she was, and my DH are classical ballet dancers). We live in NYC.

I rang DH but chickened out of telling him. It might upset him too much. He's not religious either, but when our son was born, he looked a little like my SIL and DH would just cry to and say "Oh, there's your (DSIL) face".
I have not been reading any other threads that might creep me out. I know there's a perfectly logical explanation, which makes my freak out a LU.

Oh 2oldtobeamum I'm so sorry to hear of your DS. I'm really glad you shared that.

Maybe I should tell my DH. It might make him upset, but then again, maybe it would be of some sort of comfort to him.
