That the hairy bikers NEVER bother with hair nets or even ponytails. It's awfull and obscene. Just imagine the amount of hair that must make its way into their food!!!

Have they never heard of Food hygiene?!

Beard nets were a big thing when I worked at McDonald's but I would never dream of asking dh to wear one at home lol

Do you always tie your hair back to cook?

Obscene Hmm
Yabu. They are hardly cooking for the masses, or working on a production line

I sort of forgot that people who aren't chefs cook Blush Though a hair from my friends or family wouldn't be as gross as a hair from a stranger.

I love the idea of a beard net though!! I want one even though DP can only grow a patchy goatee.Grin

Cuppa - have you ever watched "Cupcake wars"? The amount of head tossing and hair flying in that always amazes me! Especially as the Americans always seem so paranoid over cleanliness!

I have seen them when they are in some places with beard nets, I dont wear a net (hair not beard) when I cook at home and that is what they are doing It isn't obscene or awful I love the hairy bikers and Id pick out t he hair if they cooked for me Grin

The unhygienic thing on TV cooking that really bothers me is when fancy chefs tidy up imperfect gravy sploshes with the corner of a tea towel or J-cloth. Just leave it, a bonus blob of sauce is so much more appealing than a plate that's been mopped with a kitchen cloth.

The thing is its home cooking, not for sale to the public. very different. No one in these shows says "these is how you do it in a professional kitchen".

As for the towels wiping plates, they are specially reserved for that, not for any other purpose, so within hygeine rules.

Concerned about what? That they might get a bit of their own hair in their mouths?
Errmmmm....

In my home I cook fairly normally (though my ds says I am ocd) in a professional kitchen I cook according to other rules. just the way it is. If you actually followed all the professional kitchen rules on tv you would have the dullest tv ever. cook 3 secs. wipe 15 secs. cook three secs, wipe 10 more....etc.

And if you are not selling to the public, then it just doesn't apply.

the odd hair is neither here nor there in your home. or on home cooking shows. In a professional kitchen, we wear hats, caps, hairnets, whatever.

Oh yeah, I'm sure they are perfectly clean, but it seems so grubby and unnecessary

I just don't like seeing food being fingered and primped. I'm a slap it on the plate and get stuck in sort of cook.

Shock Oh my word, OP, you are way beyond BU! Nigella's a big sexy smouldering bit a woman!

Go wobble yer heed Wink

Thh, a tv show is a billion times more hygienic than a prof kitchen anyway. I am know to scream blue murder when it comes to hygiene. staff hate me...!

also do remember in a professional kitchen, your hands are your tools. There are specific sinks for hand washing, you wash your hands all the time.

What about Masterchef, the amount of poking and prodding and wiping that takes place in the restaurant kitchens.

Still wouldn't put me off eating it though.

MadameDefarge · 10/05/2013 16:37

yes. but there hands are clean! cleaner than your hands have probably ever been when cooking! Its a different word!
