AIBU?

AIBU to wonder how this is going to affect us?

Already having an extraordinarily shit day when the post arrived today. In with it was a letter to say our mortgage direct debit had bounced. We made sure that there was enough money to cover the mortgage in the account on the 27th, ready for the direct debit coming out on the 1st. According to our bank, British Gas decided that instead of taking out the direct debit for them as agreed on the 18th, that they would take it on the 30th instead. When the mortgage provider tried to take out the mortgage it would have left us £40 overdrawn so they wouldn't let the mortgage go out.

I have rang British Gas, who informed me that they have no idea why the direct debit was taken out then. All the advisor could offer was an apology. I've tried to get in touch with the mortgage provider but unfortunately the mortgage is only in my husband's name and they will not speak to me. AIBU for wondering what the heck is going to happen with regards to our credit rating etc now? Will this automatically count as a strike against us? We've never ever missed a payment on our mortgage and I'm just worried. My husband will sort out the missed payment as soon as he gets home from work late this evening but I just wanted to know whether that will sort it out or will it have had an effect on anything?

1 missed mortgage payment sorted out quickly will not affect your credit rating so relax on that score but you do need to get tough with British gas as what they have done has breached the dd guarantee

It's fine, just phone and pay asap. It happens all the time.

And got ye on the internet so you can spot these things straight away.

Don't know but am watching with interest. This happened to us a couple of months ago.

By the way British gas should reimburse your bank fees for the failed payment or make a claim with your bank under the guarantee

I wouldn't rely on internet banking to give you a true balance on your accounts though - I've had payments on a loan bounce two months running, when having checked there was enough in the bank to cover it...there actually wasn't.
I bank with the co-op and the advisor I spoke to said that their online banking did not always show transactions that had occurred a couple of days before.

You should be fine don't worry to much.

However who do you bank with and who's your mortgage with?

You'll see a difference between balance and available balance. And just have enough of a grasp to know what's coming in and out and when.

Normally I do keep an eye on thing via Internet banking but haven't recently due in part to waiting for a new Internet banking number/pass code. However, I did check the balance on the 26th and got my husband to deposit a bit more than the amount of our mortgage direct debit on 27th. We bank with Barclays and mortgage with C&G, so it's not like it's the bank's mortgage company or anything either.

I forgot about the direct debit guarentee so thank you. Thanks all for putting my mind at rest!
