and sit in my treehouse leisurely picking off my neighbours bastarding cockerels.
At 4:45 am dd (7 months) gets woken.
Just because we chose to live rural does not mean we need less sleep than town folk grrrrrrrr
(Lack of bastarding sleep emoticon)

You think a cockerel is bad? I had to live next door to people with a donkey once.

Hmm

Lots and lots of the things.

If it's a flock of cockerels then presumably they are not long for this world, and you will have the last laugh.

We had a neighbour with cockerels for a while - YANBU!

When we had chickens, we made sure they were all ladies, there was no way I wanted to be woken up at some ungodly hour by cock-a-fucking-do, let alone the neighbours

Punkatheart · 01/05/2013 10:05

That's an unreasonable time and you have a right to tell them so. Cocks can be kept inside or their coop blackened - so that they get up at a decent time.

I have ladies - they can be quite noisy too - but I would not get cockerels. It does sound as if they are for the table.

Peacocks, - they are noisy fuckers too.

YANBU

It's all that dratted pastoral poetry. Rolling green hills with distant sheep...

It's the countryside because that's where the farms are, with their noisy machinery, early starts, dust, smells, noises. I grew up in the countryside and now live in the middle of a small town. Much nicer.

We are thinking of getting chickens in a year or two, NO cocks.

I learnt how to to turn over and go back to sleep when I lived near a cockerel, although the pitiful voice coming from the neighbours saying 'Please shut up' in broken tones obviously hadn't and it's hard for a 7mo. Waking up a 7mo would make me stabby.

Mind you, I'm regularly out with the sparrow fart breaking up the local tom cats' fights. About an hour's extra sleep but I end up running down the street with a broom and no bra.

TrinityRhino · 01/05/2013 10:23

you really should and speak to them. They should be shut in the dark till a reasonable time

Move - you know your in a rural area, what did you expect.

Reminds me of a city family who moved to a nearby village for the quality of rural life and then complained about the cows mooing on the farm down the road from them Confused

We live next door to a family who have a lot to do with the local zoo... they foster all sorts of animals (usually hand rearing when the mums' reject them or recovery after operations) and it's interesting but the noises are crazy.

There's cockerels, deer, a wallaby (that once escaped, we'd just moved here and a scruffy man arrived at the door asking if we'd seen a wallaby hopping around.... erm?! We closed the door politely and assumed he was the local 'character') and some bird that sounds like Led Zeplins greatest hits.

At the risk of sounding like one of the Yorkshiremen from Monty Python, you are LUCKY!

(Wouldn't change it though)

It cracks me up when people complain about country noise, like the church bells Confused

You remind me of a family that moved into Church Cottage in the village, and then moaned about the Church Bells.

Would love to swap cockerels for a bird that brings in the day with a bit of Led Zep.

YANBU, but every morning at 6.30am two men with hammers are banging pipes all through my house, one with a big hammer and the other a small. ~when it was really cold it used to happen all through the night.

Well, that's what my central heating sounds like!

Melika did you try bleeding your rads?-we had the same problem recently.

Wander up and down the fence line between you and the cockerels making loud, pointed comments about sage-and-onion stuffing, bread sauce and chicken gravy - try to scare them into silence.

Report
melika · 01/05/2013 11:09

littlefiendsusan yes my DH who is very handy, would have done that. ~but still have to live with the little men! Think we will have some new pipes and rads soon. Thanks.

We had a flock of fucking cockerels once. Every morning (or middle of the night in summer) I wanted to go out and shoot them - and I'm a bleeding heart vegetarian. Bastards.

I love hearing the cockerels in the morning(all my neighbours have them), don't mind peacocks either,

We often have people move here and then start complaining about that and the cow poo (I am going to start a bovine nappy business when I get the time), which always is greeted with raised eyebrows,

I have been known to lean out of my bedroom window and shout at the owl, who uses the branch of the fruit tree about ten feet away from my head, to perch , then shout continuously to her mate twit' then him twoo from the other side of the tree, I keep threatening to move their nest box,

I have a pair of house sparrows nesting next to the bedroom window, they never shut up, and the blue tits, are loud,

and then we have a pair of wood pigeons who sit in the gutter above the bedroom window, to warm up in the morning sun, they chortle away as soon as it begins to get light,

The woodpeckers start early at this time of the year, we are right in the middle of quite a few pairs territory so we get a lot of oneupmanship noise. you would think someone had the builders in some mornings,

there are two pairs of nesting seagulls on nearby roofs, they have a lot to say,in the morning when it all kicks off.

we are right next to hundreds of acres of native woodland on an estuary, the dawn chorus here is amazing, all the birds on the pull, at dusk it's always worth stopping and listening, best enjoyed with a G&T.

We've got a right chirpy bugger two doors up who starts about 5 and can go all day long!

This is the twat's neighbour's third cock after we complained about the noise from his last two.

So he get's another one after a few months of peace.

Lend me your rifle so I can shoot that twat first Wink.

We live on a bus route in a residential area, why have a small holding here?-dickhead neighbour! Angry
