to not get what is wrong with 'squash'?
(128 Posts)I guess this is a bit of thread about a thread A lot of people on another thread are saying they don't like their DC having squash but will allow fruit juice or smoothies. I am wondering why?
My first choice of drink for DS is water or milk. But he is allowed squash, juice or milkshake occasionally.
I wasn't aware anything was wrong with it till I came on Mumsnet. It's all the sugar/sweeteners etc. DS drinks squash but as he scrubs his teeth twice a day, uses mouh wash etc etc I really can't see the harm. I would rather he drink water but he hates it so squash it is and ocassionally, god forbid, a touch of diet cokes
<waits to get struck down>
It's a mn thing, only water from fresh mountain streams is good enough for the mn children.
I just asked the same thing on that thread!
What's wrong with squash - in moderation?
I thought that fruit juice was worse, as it has more sugar?
I'm not keen on too much sugar, but I'd rather DS had sugar than sweeteners.
There isn't anything wrong with most things in moderation imo.
But some people like to feel superior, so their children only drink the tears of angels.
I agree with ilovexmastime I think pure fruit juice is worse, more acidic and higher in sugar.
Squash is just sugary water with a tiny bit of fruit juice in it isn't it? How is that healthy? OK for a party for not for everyday IMO.
Fruit juice is sugary as well ofcourse, but at least it might have some vitamins in it. But still not as good as water or milk. I'm lucky that I have DCs that drink water or milk I guess. They do love a bit of squash when it's available at nursery or at a party but they never ask for it at home. They know we don't have it in.
I've know one squash disallower in real life. The children are allowed water or diluted juice and the kids themselves believe squash is toxic. They also think satsumas are sweets, according to their mum. Only they know what sweets are really because I let them look in my treats tin when they asked what it was and they said they love Pez
yaimee!
I agree about everything in moderation - DS even has the dread fruit shoot sometimes although I cringe at the rankness, have you tasted those things?
I'm sure I remember reading somewhere, when my Dc were little, that too much fruit juice is the leading cause of malnutrition in the UK.
See, in my mind it's about the quality. As well as the sugars vs sweeteners thing. At least most are less full of E numbers and nasties thesedays.
A ribena or a high juice I don't mind, but an every day bargain basement own brand squash drunk in pints at a time -no. My DD has had terrible skin reactions that we put down to the crappy cheap squash she was getting at nursery.
I know a child who had to have nearly all their teeth out before even starting school from being given squash in a bottle all day long.
But dont get me started on flavoured waters either - some of those have as much sugar as fizzy drinks!
There's nothing wrong with squash.
Mine are older now but they loved ribena when they were little, hot or cold, just not so concentrated that it might damage their teeth and it was never in a bottle.
No fillings for any of them and now they're older they've replaced squash with coffee, hot chocolate [have you seen the sugar content in that stuff!] and alcohol.
Fruit shoots are like undiluted squash, I hate them. Whenever my DC have had one they start complaining that the squash I give them in too weak.
Tough is the answer to that
I was a juice/ squash/ milkshake disallower when DS was smaller tbh. Before he started going to parties, nursery etc. But squash and juice are as bad as each other IMO.
I've no idea either.
I buy full sugar versions as the sweeteners in the no added sugar versions give my eldest DD terrible stomach pains, and they drink it in moderation
Both my DDs drink lots of water, they're only allowed water at school and tend to just get a glass of water from the tap at home
They don't drink lots of squash, they have occasional glasses of lemonade and coke and I'm fine with that
Fresh fruit juice is NATURAL sugar from fruit and contains vitamin C, squash is just flavourings, sugar and/or carcinogenic sweeteners. No nutritional goodness whatsoever, just bad for you. So as a party drink fresh juice would be far better.
my boys have water or milk normally, squash at parties
we buy squash for me and dh, better for us then pop or having hot drinks
Squash ingredients:
Water,Comminuted Orange From Concentrate (11%) ,Citric Acid ,Flavourings ,Sweeteners (Sodium Saccharin, Aspartame) ,Preservatives (Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Metabisulphite) ,Stabilisers (Carboxymethylcellulose, Acacia) ,Acidity Regulator (Sodium Citrate) ,Colour (Beta-Carotene)
I can't stand the taste of sweeteners so we give watered down fruit juice. Still sugary but at least there's fewer chemicals. Do I get extra worthiness points for buying organic when I can too?
What is wrong with wanting to reduce the number of additives/chemicals that a child (or anyone) consumes?
usual how very true lol
Every thing in moderation................. you never know if you ban it they might turn in to a squash junkie in there teenage tears Next they will be banning any treats or 'fun' at children's party's and just have to stand still and shake hands.
whilst is stand in the corner slugging
Sugar-free squash often has aspartame in it which is linked with cancer apparently. Not all squash has it though. Well watered down normal squash is fine IMO, fruit juice should also be watered down because that's very sugary too (but has the same natural sugars as solid fruit and I assume we don't object to that!?) but its easy enough water it down a bit to avoid hyperactive children if nothing else :p obviously we all have things with sugar in, we brush our teeth morning and night and our teeth stay fine. It's just common sense. I water down fruit juice for myself now because apparently you're more likely to be obese if you regularly drink fruit juices?! Can't recall where I heard that though!?
I think if you think of your own childhood and use that as a guide you'll probably realise that half of the things people preach about your own parents did for you and you've turned out fine ;)
Also, my dentist told me off for drinking too much fruit juice... it's taken the enamel off my front teeth!
I'm with Bullet - it's not the sugar that bothers me, it's all the artificial crap like aspartame and saccharine that I don't like. My boys have water, milk and watered- down fruit juice as pure juice is very high in sugar. They do have squash very occasionally but I try to make sure it's not the 'no added sugar' type. It's not that I'm anti squash, when I was preg I drank loads of lemon barley water in lieu of gin and wine I just think there's better things for them to drink
The only squash in this house has sweetners, my husband drinks it. I'm not keen on our son (nearly 4) having it, but I've sort of given up the battle as my husband sees nothing wrong with it.
I'd rather he have juice and brush his teeth properly!
why is squash better than hot drinks?
