AIBU?

To have walked out of the hairdressers?

I took 2 year old DS for a haircut in a local salon this morning. I've been to this salon once and quite liked it, it had a really nice homely feel.
We turned up a few minutes before the appointment time. Our hairdresser was cutting someone else's hair, told us to take a seat, she'd be ten minutes. So we sat there and waited. During this time she stopped doing her customer's hair to describe the plot of a film she'd seen. I waited half an hour, with an increasingly agitated DS who she could see, but didn't bother to let me know how long it was going to take. When I was told them I was leaving, she blamed it on the other customer being late and said she could do the hair cut now I said it was too late and half an hour was too long to wait for a hair cut.
I always feel a bit rubbish when I do things like this, I get all adrenally and then feel crap when it burns off. Was I unreasonable to leave?

I think you did the right thing. But it makes you feel a little churned up inside, doesn't it?

Heath, I get all filled with righteous ire at the time and then afterwards I feel all British about making a fuss.

I'd call that a case off your hair nose to spite your face, especially if she was ready when you got up to leave. I expect hairdressers to overrun because they can't control the tardiness if their clients.

wish I could do stuff like that. I waited an hour the last time. That was plenty time to realise how long she was going to take to cut my 2 kids hair. Total time in salon 1 hour 45mins. I had thought, in and out, 20 mins tops. Not a chance, meantime they had a delivery of cheesburgers and chips, gossiped to friends dropping by, their kids were there hanging around for mum to finish for the night. Did I say a word? No. Do I wish I did? Yes. Will I be back? No.

I would have done the same OP.

You shouldn't keep early/on time customers waiting over late ones!

She told you 10 minutes, then took 30.

You were assertive. It might have been better to warn her you were going to have to go, so you didn't feel all churned up in the meantime, but you did nothing wrong

YANBU I'd have done the same except told her that she can't stand around chatting when she has customers waiting.

Good job OP I do the same thing especially when its someone you know expects a tip. Not your fault she decided to allow a late customer to still get a hair cut.

Good on you. I still get the rage about the fact that the stupid woman who did my hair on my wedding day kept me waiting half an hour before starting and left me stressing big time about having enough time to get ready when I got home. HUGE mistake to go to different hairdressers to normal just because I thought it would be easier..

DH has just taken DS to an other wee place and its taken less time to get there, cut the hair, get home show off the new do than we waited in the first salon.
I'm not sure she was ready to cut his hair, she only came over when I said we were leaving. I had a bit of the red mist on so I'm not sure how finished the other customers hair was, Ifancyashandy.

YANBU-only place I wait is the Drs!

Walked out of a shop yesterday.

Had only one item-not urgent, only one till open.

Yanbu half an hour I a long time to wait especially with a toddler, you were assertive and made known in a subtl way that you were not happy

nah, yanbu. I did this a few weeks ago with my 3yo DS, but mostly because it was a barbers where you queue and we would have been there about an hour. I waited for 20 mins and then got up and left.

Grrr. I had this at the Dr's the other day, if we are 10 mis late for an appointment we are marked down as DNA and it can be hard to get another appointment. yet apparently it is fine to make the patient wait for over an hour with a toddler with no apology. At the end of the day for an emergency appointment yup fine, but I had booked the appointment that morning for still a morning slot so they just have had some seriously late people. And there weren't any emergencies. I did point out that I am happy to wait for an hour but that other patients had to put up with a hungry tired toddler as I hadn't prepared enough snacks for him. My fault in that department th

Just before the Easter holidays i had this. TBF i was 10 mins late (and i'm the type of person who is never late) SHe had not started the other ladies hair but said i'd have to wait til it was done. Fair enough. I waited 1 hour (she said it would be 20 mins) and in that time her friend who was having her hair cut by another lady decided after that she wanted a spray tan which they saw to before doing my dd's. Plus they were talking and swearing quite loud. If i didnt desperately need them done (going on holiday on the monday and it was nearly 5pm so couldnt go elsewhere) i would have walked out. However i will not be going back!

I've done exactly the same thing in a hairdressers with DS before! No way I'm going to sit there while they gossip (doing one snip a minute!) while he was getting more and more wound up. They wouldn't see you if you were 30mins late so it should be the same the other way around.

YANBU I wish I had walked out when a hairdresser seriously took the piss with me. I was the first appointment that day and turned up for my appointment to find the salon not open yet. A few minutes later the nail bar lady came and opened up but no sign of the hairdresser, nail bar lady phoned her and she was still at the hairdressing supply shop, her salon opened at ten am so she had had an hour to go to the shop beforehand. When she eventually turned up she spent ages fannying around setting towels out etc and it was another 15 minutes before I got seen. The only reason I waited was because I needed my hair done for a party I was going to later and didn't think I would get another appointment on a saturday. I never went back though, and badmouthed them to everyone.

All the salons near me make you feel as though they are doing you a massive favour just giving you an appointment within the next two months. I hate hairdressers almost as much as I hate indoor soft play and that's saying something.

YANBU at all. Hairdressers are terrible for managing their time in my experience. I understand that sometimes customers will be late messing everything up however that's really not my problem when I've made the effort to get there on time and I think that they should refuse to see anyone who's more than about ten minutes late for their appointment.

The worst offenders are the big posh expensive salons as well. You'd think that the fact that they charge the earth for a cut and blow dry would mean they'd at least manage their time correctly, but no. I now go to a back street salon near my home where its cheaper, friendlier and the service is a lot better.

I used to go to a Salon where they kept me waiting for half an hour, more than once, then say "sorry to keep you waiting" and I say "it's ok" - NO IT IS NOT OK it is RUDE. They are giving their time to the customer who is late at the expense of the customer who is on time.

I found a fabulous local mobile hairdresser who now comes to my house, charges me half the price of the salon so DD can have hers done too! and I can give her a nice tip and the whole experience is so much better.

I go to a nice Regis salon 3 times a year. I've never been kept waiting more than 10 minutes and they are always lovely.

I don't think I'd ever wait more than 20 minutes before leaving though.
