Was I unreasonable not to tip hairdresser but ask him back and stop straightening me?

I had a mobile hairdresser to my house.

I have thick wavy hair and asked for it to be thinned out (as well as tidied up) so my waves were more defined.

Him 'your parting seems to be on the right hand side'
Me 'no it falls in the middle, I dont want one of those long side fringes, they don't suit me'

Ended up with a stupid side fringe blow dried straight...arrragh....why does every hairdresser in the world want to straighten my hair.

It's wavy, I like it wavy, I don't suit straight hair. I didn't tip but didn't tell him why and I feel a bit mean now as I will probably use him again because it doesn't look at all bad when rewashed and styled to my preference.

Was it mean not to tip? Will it put him off me trying to book him again?

I'm sure he'll appreciate the repeat businessperson than a tip and you can always tip him next time if you're happy with the cut

I never tip the hairdressers - mind you I go to the salon to have mine done - they charge a blinkin' fortune so no way do I give them a tip as well.
As said - I'm sure he'll appreciate the repeat business.
Have a picture ready next time of how you want the finished product to look and if it's curly then he should finish it like that.

I can't remember the last time I had my hair cut, but is it normal to tip a hairdresser? Do they not tell how much they want to be paid, and that's how much you pay them?

well it's not just him , I seem to be blighted by hairdressers who want to straighten me.

I looked daft, I did the MN haircut the last two times and whilst its looked fine the way I normally style it, straightened it looked like a toddler had been hacking aimlessly away at it. Twas embarrassing

YANBU. I HATE it. They look at you like when you say NO to straightening. They actually don't seem to know what to do to hair unless they're scorching it flat.

As a bloke I don't need to get my hair cut due to my age lol but to me tipping a hairdresser is daft, I don't tip a mechanic or the plumber, why would I tip someone who's charging what should be a suitable amount. If they don't charge a working wage that's not my problem IMO.

Raum...it comes from the idea that if someone does a personal service for you then they deserve a tip....so hairdressers, masseurs, manicurists...anyone who's touching your person basically.

Why would you tip a mobile hairdresser, isn't he self employed? You don't tip owners of businesses.

as i understand it, a tip is for the service (so in a restaurant, you pay for the meal, but the tip is for the service received from waiter)...as the fee you are paying for a haircut is for the service, why tip on top of it?

@justmature in salons because the tips go to the floor sweepers and hairwashers/trainee's.......it's something that is quite common here?

I never tip my hairdresser even if I love how she has done it. It costs 70 notes in the first place which I think is more than enough. I also have very straight hair that lacks body at the roots but most hairdressers still try to straighten it.

My hairdresser gets the curling tongs on mine, it's the only time it's curly and I love it.
Still don't tip her though, she costs enough!

I wouldn't tip him no. I know what you mean about hairdressers always wanting to straighten your wavy hair though. I haven't been to a hairdresser in over 15 years because I was so sick of them thinking they knew my hair better than me.

The last one to cut my hair I told her I just wanted it cut to my shoulders, no I didn't want layers because I look like Shirley Temple on acid with layers in my hair. No I didn't want it straightened thanks. So what did she do? Layer it and feathered it into my face and then blew it straight. She didn't get a bloody tip either, she did get a piece of my mind though. I had to spend the next months with my hair in a pony tail until the stupid layers grew out.

Now I get my dad to cut my hair, he's really good, I only ever want it trimmed anyway. I like having wavy hair even though, despite hairdressers seeming to think it's fashion suicide.
