To hate my neighbours chickens and don't think they should be allowed

In semi-detached council houses? [both private and council houses on the street)

Rats love the chicken food. I have them in our garden and we actually see them coming from her chicken hut into our garden and we have to pay to get them dealt with when they decide to live in our garden as well. There is nothing in our garden attracting them except for easy access to the chickens.

They are also noisy horrible things first thing in the morning and they are right under my bloody window and they make their stupid noises all bloody day long.

The council says there is nothing they can do about it basically. It should be against their bloody rules!! The neighbour is aware of the rats but she doesn't care.

Grumpy because one rat just stared me out as bold as anything.

Well I have chickens and live in a semi so I'd say yabu.

However we don't have rats and feed is stored in a rat proof bin.

Are yours constantly making noises as well? Hers go mad when we go outside and wake up at 5.am screeching.

Maybe you could contact the environmental health if they are allowing rats to be repeatedly attracted to their garden.

We have called the EH but not to complain, just for some advice but I will call them again.

We got the rat man to put a note on her door to give her advice on how to keep chickens and keep rats at bay but I guess she didn't care.

When did rats get so bold?

I don't mind our neighbour's chickens but I am well pissed off with his bloody cockerel!

This is the third one he's got despite us neighbours complaining at the cock-a- fuckin- doodle- do at stupid 0 clock in the morning! What a twat!

But, the sound of hens clucking is lovely! And yes, i live next to lots, with at least 3 cockerels as well. It makes me smile to hear them.

I used to have a neighbour whose dog barked at the slightest thing, that got a bit noisy but live and let live she probably didn't like my newborn crying in the night. Maybe more people should try keeping chickens.

you will always be 7 foot from a rat regardless of whether there are chickens next door or not.

An effective way to deal with them is to get rabbits - let the rabbits have the run of the garden and the rats will not venture into your garden

I'm pretty the council will send someone to deal with rats for free if you're a council tenant. They do in our area anyway.
Maybe they'll get fed up keep on paying for it and will say something.

Our next door neighbours (end of terrace) have chickens and I love them. Hence YABU.

We had rats long before we had our chickens - they came from/for next door's compost mountain. And ate through everything in our shed. So we put chickens in it instead!

They kept coming for a while but I put poison down and they seem to have stopped.

You don't have to have rats with poultry, but you do have to make an effort not to attract them, you have to have really well designed set up, and you have to make sure you clean up properly, use a decent compost set up, and never leave accessible food out.

if there is food available then rats will come, and they will breed on the strength of it, what you have now is going to double every six weeks, so get on the phone, and keep calmly explaining, it is effecting your health, life, property.

Please don't put poison down we lost two thirds of all of our barn owls which died in this country last year due to poisoned rodents.

all you are doing is killing one batch of rodents, if the food source is not removed then the rats will always come.

They don't screech, there is the occasional squabble and the odd loud clucking crescendo to announce an egg but mostly they're quiet.

Neighbour did complain when one turned out to be a cockerel and I was very considerate and cut its head off.

I bit my lip over their happy dog who would benefit from also having its bloody head chopped off.

Years ago I posted a thread on mn moaning about the neighbours kids and their teen mates who had set up a concert in the back garden one summer evening with electric guitars, drums, mic, etc....just as we were expecting guests for dinner. The MN verdict was that if I wanted peace and quiet I shouldn't have bought a semi. . I do think there is an argument that you have to accept some noise when living close to others, its whats reasonable isn't it?

I think chickens are reasonable, my neighbours obviously thought me been unable to hear my Dh talking inside the house due to their racket was also reasonable.

I didn't know that Quote - however since we killed off a massive rat (and disposed of it properly) we haven't seen any more.

It was about a year ago.

The cat used to bring in the baby rats after they died.

But I take your point.

The chickens are not really your problem but the crappy owners who wont look after them properly.
The rats need to be deltwith as they breed really quickly and can cause all sorts of damage to property. Get in touch with environmental health and tell them next door have a rat infestation.

You can't be my neighbour because we live in a terraced house but we discovered this weekend that we have rats because of our chicken food . Have already contacted Environmental Health for advice. We have THREE bloody cats too. Useless creatures...
