To think 'place marking' is pretty vulgar

Why do people think it is acceptable to shamelessly post on a thread to say nothing more than they are marking their place?

If they are that interested in the topic, surely they can make a comment that is relevant and still marks their place.

Isn't that what the 'watch this thread' button is for?

Marking place is like publicly declaring that you're rubber-necking.

Sorry, couldn't resist it.
Sometimes what I've got to say has already been said by another poster. I think it can get a bit tedious seeing the same point made over and over again.

Bearbehind Tue 16-Apr-13 20:23:26

V. Funny with the full stops.

I agree with you whinging it is just rubber-necking IMO, which, if you want to, you can do without advertising it grin

<shamelessly marks place>

i could watch the thread, but this way is easier to find where I have read up too. I might add a biscuit next time. grin

You beat me to it Amazing.

What's vulgar about it? I've never seen anyone do it for anything sensitive. It's just so people can see at a glance how far through the thread they've read. Watching the thread doesn't do that for you.

NuhichNuhaymuh Tue 16-Apr-13 20:25:53

I'm very disappointed that more people did opt for the full stops.

YABU, it makes no odds really

Bearbehind Tue 16-Apr-13 20:26:24

Seriously though, why is this considered acceptable. It's just rude in my view. Either make a relevant or supportive comment or work out here you were when you left the thread.

Tee2072 Tue 16-Apr-13 20:27:09

The entire internet, from Facebook to Twitter to MN is rubbernecking.

Get over it.

FrustratedSycamoresRocks Tue 16-Apr-13 20:32:55

I did make a relevant comment this time wink

<shamelessly vulgar>

Ps, please elaborate on your use of "vulgar" vulgar as in rude or vulgar as in common, or other?

grin Tee.

How true.

Rosesforrosie Tue 16-Apr-13 20:42:30

Vulgar? Vulgar?

Oh do get a grip.

Bearbehind Tue 16-Apr-13 20:42:33

Vulgar as in rude!

I just think it's not too hard to either make a relevant comment or find your place without doing it.

YANBU. Bugs me too.

Bearbehind Tue 16-Apr-13 20:45:00

roses vulgar as in- Deficient in taste, delicacy, or refinement. Why do I need to get a grip- it is exactly what I mean?

SanityClause Tue 16-Apr-13 20:45:29

You can "watch" a thread, and bookmark where you have read up to. There's never any need to mark a place!

Hullygully Tue 16-Apr-13 20:46:31

It is the sort of thing our brave boys died in vain for

Viviennemary Tue 16-Apr-13 20:47:14

I agree. Watch the thread if you must but this marking my place is a bit silly. Can't see the point.
