AIBU?

To sound my horn when I get cut up on the road?

Interested to hear when you feel it necessary to sound your horn, as I seem to be using it increasingly frequently Blush

I once heard there are 3 levels of road rage:

  1. Sound your horn when someone cuts you up and you sound your horn to prevent an accident or warn someone that it was dangerous

  1. Sound your horn when you have to brake sharply (is scary and wastes petrol)

  1. Sound your horn when you have to brake at all (slows you down and wastes petrol if you keep having to do this)

I'm definitely at level 2!

Highway code states only to warn others of your presence!

I've never sounded my horn. I don't see the point, no-one else knows why you're doing it so it doesn't achieve anything Confused

I've been driving 3 years and have never used my horn.

I know if I hear a horn go it makes me incredibly jumpy trying to work out what's going on so I'd never use it unless I was trying to warn someone I was there to avoid a collision.

I've been driving 14 years and have sounded my horn once when someone was reversing out of a car park space directly into me without looking. It warned her of my presence and prevented an accident.

I'd never sound my horn because I'd had to break.

I've sounded my horn when a car was about to pull out in front of me and I couldnt have stopped in time. Have also beeped when a child was about to run into the road. Both times avoided an accident by just making them aware of my presence (obv slammed on the breaks at the same time, but in case I couldnt stop)

Brake, not break Blush

No horn honking here unless I think someone's going to hit me.

BUT round here people like to honk at the lights if you don't move off the millisecond they change to green. Hmm

Well technically Robinredboots I could use my horn because it seems like the idiotic driver who cut me up wasn't aware of my presence to pull off a stupid move Grin

The serious answer to your question is YABU. As I'm sure you are aware, having passed your driving test and all, you're only supposed to be using that horn at certain hours of the day, to alert other drivers to serious hazards.

So, since you know that, I'm guessing you are being amusant .

Answer 1: I think you should get a bumper sticker saying something like: "I honk 'cos I'm horny".

Obviously that needs finessing a bit. I'm not so good on these things. Sure someone else can suggest better.

Answer 2: Ask yourself what your favourite celebrity would do. That'll give an answer: Madonna - I'm sure she'd be leaning on that horn. Nick Drake - probably not so much. Pablo Picasso - Hmmm. Actually, I have him down as a honker.

But then... I've also leaned on the horn when someone's done something so monumentally stupid that I had to take major evasive action and they weren't even aware what had happened.

I used to all the time, but don't anymore, not to signal annoyance anyway. I made a decision to stop getting mad when driving and it has made such a difference, honestly. I just let it wash over me and driving is so much nicer.

I sounded my horn at someone today. They nearly drove into me on a roundabout because they tried to cross into my lane without checking their mirrors (as I am driving a fucking Grand Picasso so clearly easy to miss Angry) and I had to hit the brakes sharply to avoid being hit. So OP YADNBU.

I used my horn just this week when an Audi tried to come up the inside of me on a one lane roundabout. Don't know where he thought he or I was going. I blared the horn at him out of both rage and worry that he was going to hit me.

I frequently bib at stupid pheasants, just in case they genuinely are a bit hard of hearing and can't hear my car driving up behind them.

Blare - prolonged horn. Bib - quick jab of horn. Fact.

I honked my horn with my boobs yesterday trying to get the pay and display ticket off the dashboard. Blush

I was out today in a busy small town, I was stopped at a pedestrian crossing and taking the next left, people were crossing in front of me when I tried to turn left so I couldn't really knock them over, and someone BEEPED ME Angry

I have to say I was absolutely furious (possibly OTT) and put the window down when turning left to shout 'DID YOU EXPECT me TO RUN THEM OVER' thankfully he couldn't see me from the angle I was at so there was no shouting involved, Oh I was furious, most likley because I had just done the No. 3 all the way there....with someone in the car in front making gestures for going so slow, or me being too fast or something.

I'm staying home tomorrow

I rarely beep, I'm all about the whole 'shouting "you cunt" out the window' thing

oh yeah YoniYappy, I hate when people beep me, cos I actually think I'm a good driver, so I drive slowly at times for a reason - not only to prevent accidents but also to prevent build-up of traffic at junctions etc. so I'll stop early if necessary. That seems to incense drivers but they just don't seem to realise I do it so I don't block the entire flow of traffic when the lights change :(

Sounded mine today at a cyclist who passed me on the inside while I was signalling left Hmm. (I didn't cut her up, before you ask... I was some way ahead but then got stuck in a queue.) I had noticed the cyclist (despite head-to-toe black clothes) but the cyclist was totally oblivious to me - even after I sounded my horn, I think! Confused Not surprising she didn't see me since she didn't look round once in the 200 yards or so I saw her.

Was tempted to sound it again when someone coming from the opposite direction cut right across me to turn right, to the extent I had to stop completely in order not to hit them. Shock I just gesticulated at them instead, then noticed that they were towing someone and the rope had just broken leaving the towee behind. Poetic justice I guess Grin.

I tend to honk at glaiket looking chuds that wander in front of the car in the city centre, I like to embarrass them !

I usually have to use mine when knobheads pull out at junctions and I have to slam my breaks on. It's really bad for that around here.

I do through some fantastic fifthly looks at people and name-call a lot bit, but NO HORNS!

I'm sure there is law on using them now, I may have dreamt that

What's the point of having a horn if youre not allowed to use it? I use mine all the time. It's rude not to.

People in London and other big cities are very horn happy. In the country, if you hear a horn, it means business!
