AIBU?

to hate it when people start a famous people you know thread

And someone comments saying -

Yes, I know an extremely famous A-list actress.

Or ...

My friend is very good friends with a huge pop star from the 90s.

Why not just say who it is, or just not say anything at all?

It's like they want people to beg them to say who it is.

(I find it as annoying as someone on Facebook having a status - omg the worst thing ever has just happened to me.

  • What's wrong hun?
  • I'll pm you

They want people to know that something is wrong and want people to ask them but they generally have no intention of ever telling you)

Oh golly yes.
That woman who lives in Buckingham Palace was saying the same to me only the other day!

I should add, I find no problem with people that actually start those sort of threads, as they can be really interesting and they always seem to end up being pages long - so they are clearly popular. Smile

But then ... I also sort of hate it when someone say ... well a friend of a friend used to live on the same street as someone who used to cut the hair of the woman who used to be in Eastenders.

... really? wow. What an amazing claim to fame Grin

I once had a drink with that chap who used to live at 10 Downing Street. Nice enough bloke said he'd be PM one day. UN peace envoy these days. Don't agree with most of what he did but he did buy me a pint

I don't know him but Lewis from Hollyoaks was at soft play yesterday and he spoke to me! Is that a claim to fame?!

I love the sleb threads when people have met them and say how nice or nasty they are.
But they have to name them otherwise it's ever so dull.

I dislike them because it feels a little bit "kiss and tell". Yes I do know/have met a lot of well known people (through working for a while in music business and current job) but I don't think it's something that I should be disclosing details of online.

Spent a few days in a rather small W. African country with a very pleasant woman a few years ago. She was kind enough to buy me the odd beer as I helped her find her way around.

Seems her mum died very recently and this has hit the news.

YANBU I was just saying this to Brad and Ange the other day. She agreed with me, but he said he likes to guess the sleb.

I bumped into John Prescott outside Sainsbury's the other day. (Is smaller than I expected)
Any good?

I was standing next to Jason Priestly last year at an Easter egg hunt and it took DH almost A YEAR to tell me.

I can't wait for the day when I can reveal I'm a close personal friend of Rusty Lee and not be bombarded with jealous attacks. It's not easy mixing with the great and good.

I understand why so many people are coy about their connections Hmm

YANBU.

Because we live in Luvvieville, some of our friends are, genuinely, well known. I don't join in the "Famous People" threads because I'm not prepared to name them. They are friends. Not names on a list.

Because unless the person can be arse to name change, they would be immediately identifying themselves if they say I'm so and so sister, cousin, mum, daughter, next door neighbour, or friend.

and then someone will write quoteunquote (but use real name) relative of famous person said that, maggie thatcher was a twonk, lets her children run feral , was left down mine shafts as a child,

or person of interest will say, why did you mention me on MN, because someone will notice.

Harry Enfield got into York university because he rescued a duck.
