..every day, there just seems to be some new fangled gadget that I need to use, that I just Do. Not. Understand!

I'm only 37, but I'm beginning to feel like a blinking pensioner who can't keep up with the times! no, actually, scrap that- my Dad is far better at this stuff than me

Recently, we got a new lap top. It has made my life 10 X more stressful, as I cannot find the things that I need!

For example, on the old one I had my I tunes on the desktop. Tonight, I fancy going for a jog, and thought 'ooh, I'll just get my I pod sorted'. But nay, of course it's not that simple- I cannot find said I tunes on the laptop. I have no idea why. I mean, really no idea.

This kind of thing happens on a daily basis. I just learn how to use something, feel pleased with myself, and then it changes and I don't understand what to do!

It really stresses me out. Is there any hope for me, or should I just join an Amish community and be done with it?

No - just ask on here :)

You probably have to download iTunes again as it's a new laptop. Just go to itunes.com and follow the instructions on there.

It's horrible when you get something new and it makes you feel all disoriented but you'll get used to it and then it will be as easy to use as the old one.

It's got Windows 8 on hasn't it Grin? I am still struggling to find my stuff on our new one which we've had since November...

If you hover over the bottom right of the screen, one of the options that comes up is "search" - most programmes are in apps I think.

Or you just abuse it like I do hissing "where's my fucking stuff then eh?" whilst repeatedly pressing the windows key...

Window 8 is the most complicated software to use.

I am pretty good with technology, so after upgrading to window 8 I actually wiped the hard drive and put windows 7 back on.

Oh god...Windows 8. I keep pressing SOMETHING, God knows what, which makes the page I'm on disappear and I can't find it again. And don't even get me started on PDF files, you click open and they do, but in a mysterious as yet undisclosed location.....

The thing that gets me is the way that the wool is pulled over people's eyes in the workplace - "oooh how labour saving" "streamline the department" etc etc -

so instead of having a secretary typing up a letter to people who REALLY need it - you now have emails to all and sundry, junk mail to everyone - just hit print - and you need a whole bloody IT department AS WELL AS the secretary who types up the letter.... (who now needs to go on a training course every other year to learn the new added value of the next super duper word processing package) - where has the value been ADDED exactly??

and you have to have procedures in place so people don't waste time on the computer instead of actually working.... I despair sometimes I really do.... they are handy tools sometimes, but there is a big myth about them saving money in the workplace.....

Windows 8, what were they thinking. It just has a mind of its own, it makes me feel like a 99 year old opening a computer for the first time

Windows 8 made me cry. Typing a note and attaching is to an email, 10 minute job. An hour and a bloody half. Still don't know how I did it in the end. Amish sounds good.

DP bought me a much needed computer for Christmas - it's got windows 8 on. I can't bring myself to tell him how much I hate windows 8! Things appear and disappear at random times, you have to look up how to do everything, I've lost google chrome, and I've got to somehow transfer all my music to a new I tunes account. I also really dislike hotmail on there. Hmm

Lol. I just remembered back in primary school we had one Acorn BBC computer for the whole school. With huge floppy disks. I never actually used the computer and never saw it being used so god knows what it was used for!

mawgatron I thought it was essential when you get a new pc that one of the first things you do is download safari/Firefox and then delete Internet explorer? :o

YANNNNNNNNNNNNNBU. I so agree. I even hate remote controls. Two for the TV. One to change channels and one for the volume!!! I thought this was supposed to make life easier. My computer is so so slow but I don't want a new one as I'll never get used to it. I think I might join the Amish. Sounds a lot less stressful!

It's crazy I'm only 29 and sometimes feel lost in it. (DH calls me a technophobe though...)

We went to a national trust property at the weekend, lovely weather, lots of people of a certain age enjoying the sunshine in the gardens.

They were all tapping away on fucking iphones, yet there was me the young person, being all technology free.

It was like i'd stumbled into some Doctor Who episode.

hahaha glossyflower, I remember those days - and before Blush - when we got our first computer at school it was a graphite card reader - you had to pencil mark in a box for every part of every instruction, it was the size of a mini and gave you an answer on ticker-tape..... that you then had to feed into a telex type reader...

A big myth about computers saving money in the workplace? :)

We just implemented a project that removed the need to employ 5 staff. The computer now does their job in about 5 minutes.

As for going on a course every other year in order to learn the latest bits of a word processing package, I have never heard of anyone go on such a course.

Some people need to know how to use the clever bits on Excel because they need to be able to pull in data from various sources, clean them up, analyse the data and produce charts, graphs etc. These people go on regular Excel courses. But when it comes to Word, people just get on with it.

From the comments made by people, they sound technology challenged as opposed to Windows 8 being crap. I love it. I'll love it even more once I saved enough for a large touch screen monitor

mts I'm not technology challenged, I love my mac, but hate the pc with windows 8 on it. It's definitely the windows interface I hate rather than me being the problem.

I don't have any problems with Windows 8 but to be truthful I only go on the computer to come on mumsnet and do online shopping!

DH has it on his windows tablet thingy. He says it's much better used with touchscreen rather than mouse. I suppose that was what it was designed for really..
