To ask you all why you didn't tell me about Pinterest sooner?

It's absolutely brilliant!

I'm trying to learn to sew. I found a link to pinterest, and within 30 minutes I had masses of tutorials, ideas, inspirations, all pinned on my 'sewing tips' board.

I'm not really into FB or twitter, but Pinterest?

I'm in love.

Just take care if you pin images from google or websites as Pinterest is a copyright infringement goldmine

lougle Sun 07-Apr-13 12:01:19

It's fine if you add a comment - comes under fair usage.

Unfortunately lougie you are incorrect. In order to claim fair usage you have to admit to copyright infringement and then it is up to the court to decide whether there is a case for fair usage.

Fair use has nothing to do with attribution to the original source of the image so that would not cover you.

What if you made the board private?

GreenLeafTea Sun 07-Apr-13 14:23:26

I tried Pinterest but I didn't really get it. What exactly do you do?

I think it is the sort of thing that I would like.

Even though the board is private the Pinterest site is index by google and the images can be located there.

I have my head in the sand about the above hmm

BUT!!!!! It's brilliant! I've got loads of craft and natural cleaning ideas to hand.

Trouble is instead of getting on with them I'm either on there or on here.

Pinterest has become my newest addiction.

It's addicting and can suck away whole afternoons where nothing else gets done.

Green, it's an online pinboard. When you view a website, you can pin a copy of an image to your board. By clicking on the image, you visit the site the picture originates from.

So, I can read an interesting tutorial, pin apicture from it to my pinterest board, and it's waiting for me, like a bookmark. You can see other people's boards, too, unless they are private, and can repin something from their board to yours.

Yep it's good isn't it.

I don't do twitter or FB (except for one group) or LinkedIn.

ClaireDeTamble Sun 07-Apr-13 17:00:18

The pins link back to the original websites, so how is it copyright infringement?

ClaireDeTamble Sun 07-Apr-13 17:00:57

It's basically just bookmarks!

MrsHowardRoark Sun 07-Apr-13 17:04:37

I'm completely addicted to it.

As far as is practical I click through the links to find the original source and the pin from there.

As Claire said, it is essentially a place to bookmark pages you like.

treas Sun 07-Apr-13 17:48:32

ClaireDeTamble - It is copyright infringement because you are using an image from someones site without their permission and saving it as a new image file as if you are the originator of the image.

Alternatively, if not saving an image as a new image file then people are hotlinking to the original image, which is in fact theft of the original sites broadband that they obviously pay for.

Anyway the easy way to make sure you don't infringe anyone's copyright is to
1/ Avoid any images that have watermark copyright logos on them
2/ email owner of the image and ask their permission to use it

Anyway as far as I can tell individuals who pin copyright images will just have the image removed from their pinboards by Pinterest or if a persistent offender have their boards deleted.
