To think my 92 year old Grandma is awesome?

I've just got off the phone with my Grandma. She has a pretty good sense of humour and mentioned that she was lonely. I told her she needs to get online (as I always do) as it would make her life so much easier and she could chat online etc. I jokingly suggested online dating and she said "who'd want me with a walking stick." I said at 92 most people would have either a stick or a frame or a wheelchair, and she said " God no! I don't want some old codger. I want someone who could pull my curtains on for me, and reach things in high up places". I suggested maybe a toy boy then.

Well the seed is sown. She's coming over next week to check out our laptops and iPad to see what would suit her best. She did also say that it would be nice not to have to rely on her mills and boon and made a joke about sex. I won't go into that as I will have to bleach my brain as it is - her being my Grandma and all.

The whole conversation got me thinking though. She just doesn't see herself as old at all. She wears crazy mismatched clothes, bling jewellery and bright makeup. She once went to a fancy dress party as "an old lady". Another time she went as a bunny girl. And did a dance routine.

Where I live, most people her age are really racist (including my other grandparents who are now dead) but she never has been. She made friends with the Indian family across the road when they first took over the shop and used to look after their children when the parents had to go to he wholesalers. She was invited to the daughters very lavish Indian wedding and had a ball. The son has gone a bit off the rails and is a bit of a "gangsta" has even spent time in prison. But he's still got a soft spot for grandma and regularly takes her to town to pick up her pension in his 2 seater sports car blaring out bangra. He parks on double yellows, sees grandma into the bank, and then circles until she's ready. She loves it! She says she feels like Bonnie and Clyde!

I could give loads more tales. I don't think I'll be like her when I'm 92. Hell, I'm only 40 and I'm not like her! I think I'll be bitter and twisted and harking back to my youth.

I'm not being unreasonable though am I? She is pretty awesome.

She sounds wonderful! My own Granny lived to 97 and lived life to the full almost to the end. Loved a whisky or three as well. She refused completely to deal with technology though! We got her a DVD player and it left the flat in the same condition as when it entered. Unused! "Oh I can't work it dear! It just doesn't work!" she'd say.
I bloody love Grannies - they're awesome!

YANBU, she's great Smile

But I've met similar kinds of people to your Grandma and they're just so giving and accepting of everyone, it puts me to shame. I love it when they say things like 'don't you listen to anyone else, just be who you want to be', and 'everything's so expensive these days, it's so much harder for youngsters today'.

Ah she doesn't drink. Never has. (The rest of the family do though so maybe that's why no one else has lived as long as her). She doesn't need it though as she's as mad as a box of frogs without it.

She doesn't eat healthily really - mainly surviving on her own (incredibly badly cooked food) and "sweetcake". She did say though that if she got a toy boy she'd put another oxo cube in her vile "mince concoction".

Grin We should set her up with my Grandad. He's equally awesome.

The man has a better social life than I do. A few years ago he broke up with his 55 year old girlfriend because she was 'too clingy' - he was 82 at the time!

When my uncle got married, we were sat at the top table together. There is a fantastic picture capturing the looks on the faces of myself and two female cousins when he decided to inform us that viagra was over rated and completely unnecessary.

Is the neighbour's son not tall enough to hang the curtains Grin?

She sounds great. My 88 year old nan is visiting at the mo and is despairing of me not knowing how DH irons his shirts or why I don't dry the dishes. I'm a FT student and this Does. Not. Compute. but I suppose none of her contemporaries would have gone to university.

She sounds like my great grandma.

Shes a little Irish lady and looks so fragile but is she bollocks! Shes currently match making my brother with any woman she finds.

She also Skype's me and my son. She says she is too young to be a great great grandma.

She drinks sherry every night, walks a mile everyday and still tells my grandad off which is funny as hes a 64 year old man Grin

No the curtains wasn't a euphemism. What she actually said was (and you may want to stop reading now) that she remembered her friend telling her (friend was probably in her 80s) that she had to lift her husband on and off for "encounters" and friend didn't really like doing this. I said maybe friend could have made use of other available positions nod my grandma said "no she couldn't go on top as he was a "sickly looking man" and friend was a rather large lady - she would hAve killed him". Cannot believe my grandma knows about positions and stuff. Kind of thought she'd only done it the once to produce my Dad...

North Grandmas and great grandmas have never had sex ever. Their babies just turned up, the stork story is very true when it comes to grandmas.

Sirboobalot that sounds like a possibility and at 82 your dad would be a toy boy! As long ad he's not got a stick though as she doesn't want to look like an "old couple"

To be fair though my grandad (who she married obviously) was in a wheelchair all the time I knew him.

Great aren't they.

I have my grandad and nanny alive at over 80, so much fun. Grandad is grumpy but still so loving but oh so grumpy.

Nanny spends her time telling me grandad has ali imers (Alzheimer's) and wondering how my blue berry phone works.

They drove down from Kent last weekend, we offered to pick them up and take them home but they said no, grandad enthused over my lamb roast, lots of hums and dribble Grin

Nanny: Grandad you have no taste buds, why are you humming over the Dinner?

Grandad: i have no taste buds where your cooking is concerned but this is lovely.

If they get the answer phone when they call they just shout "it's nanny and grandad" and they still call and sing happy birthday to me at the grand old age of 30 + something.

OP your Grandma is amazing!
Do get her set up with a laptop or something, and think about introducing her to Facebook (to link up with family, friends etc) and Skype. She might like Gransnet too!

Selks i think my grandma would love Facebook. She's really not a typical 90 year old and is fully compis mentis.

Briansbrian - your GPs sound ace. Sadly my other 3 GPs died a long time ago so my grandma is the only one I have left. She's been on her own for 30 years now. God that's ages. Never worked it out before. My grandad was a lot older than her so she must have only been 62 when he died. No wonder she's wanting to abandon the mills and boon!

Utterly awesome and I think you should take all the lessons you can from her. Fanfuckintastic.
Not quite on the same scale, but my Ds was quite impressed by my then 71 year old dad (a mere stripling by your grandmas standard) having a damn good bounce on his trampoline when we first got it. I was Envy as my pelvic floor wouldnt allow more than 3 minutes!
Now at 74 he still plays a pretty energetic game of football with Ds. Ds is nearly 7 so I hope he has some good memories to look back on.
