I've just got off the phone with my Grandma. She has a pretty good sense of humour and mentioned that she was lonely. I told her she needs to get online (as I always do) as it would make her life so much easier and she could chat online etc. I jokingly suggested online dating and she said "who'd want me with a walking stick." I said at 92 most people would have either a stick or a frame or a wheelchair, and she said " God no! I don't want some old codger. I want someone who could pull my curtains on for me, and reach things in high up places". I suggested maybe a toy boy then.
Well the seed is sown. She's coming over next week to check out our laptops and iPad to see what would suit her best. She did also say that it would be nice not to have to rely on her mills and boon and made a joke about sex. I won't go into that as I will have to bleach my brain as it is - her being my Grandma and all.
The whole conversation got me thinking though. She just doesn't see herself as old at all. She wears crazy mismatched clothes, bling jewellery and bright makeup. She once went to a fancy dress party as "an old lady". Another time she went as a bunny girl. And did a dance routine.
Where I live, most people her age are really racist (including my other grandparents who are now dead) but she never has been. She made friends with the Indian family across the road when they first took over the shop and used to look after their children when the parents had to go to he wholesalers. She was invited to the daughters very lavish Indian wedding and had a ball. The son has gone a bit off the rails and is a bit of a "gangsta" has even spent time in prison. But he's still got a soft spot for grandma and regularly takes her to town to pick up her pension in his 2 seater sports car blaring out bangra. He parks on double yellows, sees grandma into the bank, and then circles until she's ready. She loves it! She says she feels like Bonnie and Clyde!
I could give loads more tales. I don't think I'll be like her when I'm 92. Hell, I'm only 40 and I'm not like her! I think I'll be bitter and twisted and harking back to my youth.
I'm not being unreasonable though am I? She is pretty awesome.
