AIBU to really dislike the fact that almost everyone now uses 'it's like' or 'it was like', instead of 'it's as if, or 'it's as though"? Are we all too lazy to 'speak proper' any more??

You need to tell people. I am sure they will thank you for correcting them. Wink

YANBU

Speech may evolve, but when 'like' becomes grammar, it is more of a regression

"It's like" is perfectly correct, though, e.g. "It's like sucking a lemon."

HmmI'm ashamedly guilty of this but I will endure to mend my ways. PROMISE.

It's as if it isn't top of my list of things to be worrying about of a Saturday evening. It's as though Ant and Dec are more interesting.

I was stuck on a train today, surrounded by a gaggle of giggling teenage girls. I was like ready to kill them by the end. I have never heard the word used so many times in such a short space of time.

IMO the most overused word is 'obviously'.

How can you tell if a Californian is drowning in the sea?

They wave and shout 'Like help, kinda'

Its equal only to "and then he said 'yerh', so I said 'yerh', then he said 'no', so I said 'why', so he said 'dunno'. Just get to the bloody point.

Yanbu - and bloody hell I'm surprised at the harsh comments you have received. "It's like" talking chav is now the norm.

It's like, everything's like a simile or something.

A simile is a comparison using "like" or "as". Sticking "like" on the end of sentences as a qualifier is grammatically incorrect and a little annoying, but similes are valid sub-categories of metaphor, and for that reason YABU.

And then I like turned round and said...

Adding "like" into every sentence is, sortoflike, a West Country/Bath/Brizzle thing, int it, like?
