To think DH will never change?

He is a noisy eater. sad

I've mentioned it and mentioned it and for the love of god I just want him to close his mouth while he eats

He says again and again that he'll try, but it never gets any better.

i know ithe grand scheme of things its trivial, but to me it's akin to scraping nails down a blackboard and it drives me insane, my 2 year old has better table manners than him!

I'm starting to think that this is never going to change, it's too ingrained in him, AIBU?

ToupOfRegDwight Fri 05-Apr-13 13:23:58

YANBU. MIL is a horrible chewer. I've been known to excuse myself and leave the room as it's unbearable!

GreenEggsAndNichts Fri 05-Apr-13 13:24:44

LTB.

NewlywedUpTheDuff Fri 05-Apr-13 13:25:00

I hate it too! It's horrible! I don't need to hear your food slapping around your mouth thanks!

My DH does it every now and then but a quick look from me and he swiftly closes it.

YANBU for hating it! But how you get him to break the habit without reminding him everytime i don't know confused

ChasingStaplers Fri 05-Apr-13 13:25:01

I dumped a boyfriend for this as I think it indicated a deeper problem (not saying this is the case for you!) but I don't think it's easy for people to chane how they eat TBH.

I remember reading a thread on here that gave it an actual name - where you can't tolerate certain noises and I've certainly not liked the noise of others eating, including my dad when I was a child.

TroublesomeEx Fri 05-Apr-13 13:26:37

I can't tolerate the noise of people eating either. You are not alone or U.

gobbledegook1 Fri 05-Apr-13 13:27:33

Yes YABU!

Only because my DP moans about me being a noisy eater too and I just can't help the way I eat. I mostly eat with my mouth closed though.

HoHoHoNoYouDont Fri 05-Apr-13 13:29:10

YANBU

Another thing that bloody annoys me is constant sniffing. Just blow your bloody nose!

How about breathing?? Should we let them breathe? smile

MyPlugInBaby Fri 05-Apr-13 13:34:47

That's what I was thinking GreenEggsAndNichts but he is quite nice in other ways.

I am happy with his breathing I think. DD has started telling him off too <proud>

I watched in horror as a man closed one nostril with a finger and 'blew' his other nostril out onto the floor! It was in a car park. I thank gd that my husband doesn't do that. Don't get me wrong - I know he's awake as he farts, he uses words I can't bear and doesn't model polite behaviour / responses to ME I'm front of the children (making me want to cry or slap him). But that man...
Something else!

MyPlugInBaby Fri 05-Apr-13 13:40:57

gobbledegook I think if he closed his mouth and was still noisy I could tolerate that. It's the chew squuuuuealch slurp chew I can't abide.

But what I was really wondering is if it is too late to expect him to make a change now, even if he did put the effort in? Like ChasingStaplers said, it must be very hard to change the habit of a lifetime like that.

bugsyburge Fri 05-Apr-13 13:44:13

this drives me crackers...it's like sitting at a table with a cow chomping on grass- he remembers 90% of the time but when DH forgets I can't help but wail at him!angry

....unfortunately I haven't been able to train him to stop slurping soup therefore he is not allowed to eat soup in a room with meshock

Euphemia -that noise that your DH made eating a boiled sweet? My DH can do it with practically any food you care to name.

He is a good man and I love him dearly. But by God he's a noisy eater. It's not like he eats with his mouth open, he doesn't, but he sloshes and crunches and kills everything stone dead with his chompers before he swallows (noisily).

And drinks? Does he sip? No. He takes a great big gulp and then swallows it in three goes. Loudly.

Mind you, he's also a noisy sneeze/cougher/sniffer. I suppose it's all connected somehow...

MyPlugInBaby Fri 05-Apr-13 15:53:27

Oh ,y goodness Euphemia I think that's something else I'm going to notice now [shock

purrpurr Fri 05-Apr-13 15:58:30

OP, this can be fixed. An ex of mine was horrible company at the dinner table - at one meal in particular I was repulsed and had to leave. A couple of years later we met up and I was shocked when he ate quietly, with perfect table manners. I couldn't help but say something and he simply said he'd worked on it.

My DH, on the other hand, has ok table manners, but picks his nose something chronic. HOW do I get him to stop?! Is it wrong that I have lost respect for my PIL precisely because they weren't able to teach him that nose picking is wrong when he was a kid? HOW cherished must you be as a child that you can walk around with your finger up your nose having a merry forage in company and not be reprimanded?

littlemissbunny Fri 05-Apr-13 16:13:08

My oh is the noisiest eater I have ever met, it drives me insane that he doesn't close his mouth. The trouble is he claims he does close his mouth, so no matter how many times I say it, it doesn't make a difference because he denies it.

He is also a very loud snorer, if I could make him sleep in the shed, and eat his food there I would.

I've given up asking him to close his mouth, his family are bad for it too, when we eat with them all I just want to scream I can feel my blood boiling!

ToupOfRegDwight Fri 05-Apr-13 17:09:58

Bunny could you not sneakily film him to show that he eats like that?

OHforDUCKScake Fri 05-Apr-13 17:38:14

Does he snore? Or sleep with his mouth open?

My eldest constantly eats with his mouth open it drives me fucking bonkers. I tell him all the time.

But just recently Im entertaining the idea that he cant breath at that well through his nose, so mouth breaths mainly, snores a bit.

It can be down to large adenoids, colds or hayfever anything that effects your sinuses.

sooperdooper Fri 05-Apr-13 17:43:49

My Dh does this too, and he 'forgets' to use a knife sometimes and pushes the food onto his knife with his fingers angry

It makes me want to kill him, and it also puts me off my dinner, I tell him all the time, he'll stop when I point it out but I hate it sad

BeingAWifeIsNotForMe Fri 05-Apr-13 18:21:11

Misophonia sad there is no cure.

littlemissbunny Fri 05-Apr-13 19:24:21

I have just read about misophonia and it really described me to a tee.

I just thought I was irrational I never realised there was actually a condition, makes very interesting reading!
