I was on here a little while ago asking for advice about my nightmare neighbour who lived below me. Unfortunately, she died rather suddenly so new tenants were found for the flat.

A single man (apparently) moved in. Fine. Nice and quiet so far which is all I really care about.

But:

The shared hall stinks of cannabis all the time. This doesn't bother me much - but it smells a bit different to the usual, smoky smell. It smells more "vegetative", if you see what I mean. And it's permanent.

One man is meant to have moved in - but several different ones let themselves in and out at different times of the day and night. One even rang my bell a few days ago because he didn't have a key to the main front door, just the separate flat door.

Very, very bright lighting can be seen through the glass panel in their front door. Much brighter than have ever been seen with previous tenants.

My worry is that if a farm has been set up, there are quite serious fire risks.

I spoke to my upstairs neighbour and we've discussed the possibility of having a quiet word with the police. But I don't know if there's any justification for that yet - and if we're wrong, we would have to live with one very pissed off neighbour who'd had his home raided by the police on our say so. I don't fancy that much.

So......? What do you think. Anyone have experience of this?

It does sound suspicious. Can you phone the police anonymously and ask their advice/what other things you should be on the look out for?

The police won't raid anyone's home on your say so.

I'd probably call 101 if you're worried and just tell them what you told us.

They won't know who reported them. As long as you haven't mentioned it to the neighbour they won't have reason to suspect you.

Oh, I know. I just meant that we'd have put the whole thing in motion by contacting the police in the first place. I realise they'd investigate first!

The curtains are permanently shut, yes. I can't say it feels any warmer, but it's hard to say as my central heating pipes run below my floors so they are always warm. Have been listening out for any buzzing from a ventilation system, but can't hear anything.

It's odd.

they'll also ask the force helicopter to point an infrared camera at the flat, next time it's passing. Easy.

Yep call them. We had a rental house in our road that was used as a cannabis farm. You would never have known from the outside but the damage inside was terrible. Do you think the landlord has a clue? Does the landlord do regular inspections? You might also want to check your electricity meter in case there is anything dodgy going on with the electricity - it's not unheard of for people to hook up to legit meters.

Get in touch with the police. If the smell is pervading the property then it will be detectable outside too. Then you will have any local entrepreneurs trying to liberate the source of the smell for profit.

A friend of mine a few towns over from me had a similar situation and the local populus of that mind started breaking into surrounding properties trying to track it down. The police investigated but they reckon it had been moved by the time they got round to it (a couple of weeks later). Possibly the spate of break ins had spooked them.

they take note of your report. several neighbours had to report before they did anything here. (it was full riot gear according to the electrician who was coming out the other block. he was like )

If you report, the police can check the name of the tenant and see if they have any previous convictions for drugs.

A friend's rented house was used as a c farm and it was wrecked. The damp from sprinklers and humidity destroyed insides. If there really are v bright lights I would def contact police. Who lives below them, are there damp patches on ceilings?

I'd tell the police as well. If there's nowt going on then nothing will happen, but if there's a cannabis farm, you want rid of it.

Try looking through the letter box in the middle of the night - the lights and heat will be on and you will smell the hydroponics.
