In general, would you get something out of the kitchen bin and put it next to something you're about to eat. Is that actually OK and it's my "bins are full of germs" hysteria that is making me feel a bit queasy?

I would not get something out of the bin to eat. The bin is where we throw dirty tissues. For that reason alone I wouldn't.

It would depend how long it had been in the bin for and what it was. If it was literally a 30 seconds or less, and it wasn't a food item, and it hadn't been next to something rank then I might (I'm quite lax, as you can see!)

I don't think germs can leap from one item to the other, so I'm fairly sure you're safe. Depends what it is. If it's something stinky or slimy then that might put me off.

Of course, if you went delving in your bin and then picked up your food - you're a bit minging but I assume you wash your hands.

We have a little pot that takes the peelings and things to the compost bin. I have fished things out of there before and gave them a wash and then cooked them (eg when accidentally chucking carrots in instead of peel when on auto-pilot). But not bin ... Come to think of it the bin is probably quite clean since food waste is disposed elsewhere. Hmm. So

OK so opinion is divided which is making me feel better.
We were at MIL's yesterday (and this is not a MIL thread because I know my own, hygiene obsessed mum does the same sort of thing). DS had a party bag. One of the felt tips from it had its nib pushed in so I'd thrown it in the bin when tidying up. He was upset so MIL fished it out of the bin and put it back in the party bag - next to his kitchen roll wrapped cake.
Normal bin - food scraps, used tissues, that sort of stuff.
But I hate bins. I can't use them in public unless I don't actually have to touch them. I wash my hands after emptying them, and aftetr wheeling the wheelie bin to the end of the drive. Other people do not seem to share my obsession and yet still appear to be living, breathing and not ill all the time :o

As our bin normally just has food wrappers in it, and the odd bit of kitchen towel - and no meat wrappers as we're veggie - so our bin is actually pretty clean - as clean as the cupboards the food gets put in anyway! So yes I would unless there was something else in the bin - like a visitor's nappy I suppose...

Our food waste bin and compost bucket are the disgusting ones that I wouldn't retrieve stuff out of....

Sorry just to clarify, I wasn't around during the felt tip drama and wasn't aware it was going on. MIL didn't know the felt tip was useless, and assumed it had been put in the bin by accident.

And so I called her a cahhhh, head butted her, stabbed her with the blunt felt tip and we went on our merry way :o
