to ask for help re hcg levels - I am driving myself completely & utterly mad

The situation is that I am on my 5th round of IVF with two embryos transferred and was delighted to find out I was pregnant - I have had two BFPs before that did not progress. Last Friday, i.e. 5 days ago, I did the Clearblue with conception indicator and it gave me 3+ weeks. The hcg threshold for 3+ is 2000 miu/ml. On Monday I had a rapid loss of pregnancy symptoms, which I have experienced before so is a familiar feeling. To be certain I had my hcg done at the clinic yesterday. This morning they have phoned to say my level was 1160 and were adamant that this was a good sign and consistent with an ongoing pregnancy. I said I was not in any way convinced and that if it had started to go wrong on Monday wouldn't it be this high and they said not. You are meant to have 48 hours between tests but were happy to do another one for me today, which would show if it was falling at least. The only bit of hope for me is that one embryo has failed and the other progressing, but I don't believe so as I feel so empty. When it is working, I experience the pregnancy like an electrical current in my body and when it's gone, that feeling goes. What do people think? I know I only have to wait until tomorrow to find out, but that seems like an eternity... thanks for reading

I hope it works out, fingers crossed, I did have one survive, one not, in fact I found the start the worst bit. in terms of whether you can be sure, what you are experiencing, that's unique to you. They can do a transv ultrasound soon, that will give you more info. Best you can do is try and distract yourself even though its horrible, time to break out a box set?

Think in your heart of hearts you know the answer but I really hope I'm wrong. \But 3+ weeks is really early to be experiencing any symptoms at all - most people don't realise till 6 - 8 weeks that they could be pg.

those levels are good. See what the next test brings.

pregnancy symptoms come and go a lot in the early weeks.

My 'the hcg levels are too low, you're going to miscarry' baby is upstairs having his nap. He's 3.

So don't give up hope yet!

Like you I've had problems conceiving and pregnancies progressing but the last time I took at pregnancy test I was convinced I wasn't pregnant. I had no symptoms at all. But I was and I went on to have my son now 8 months. Remember every pregnancy is different. I have everything crossed for you that this works out for you. I agree with Ionasky you need some serious distraction. Go out for walk - see a friend - go shopping - cinema. Whatever makes you feel better. Do not google! Good luck!!

It is a good initial level - my first HcG at just under 4 weeks (IUI baby and yes, I tested early!) was 89. The levels didn't double over a 48 hour period, but just about did over 72 hours, which is the outside threshold. By 5 weeks, they were still only 730, and although the pregnancy could be seen via T/V scan, we were told that the embryo was too small and not viable.

My non viable, too small for dates, non doubling HcG embryo is now 7 years old and the tallest girl in her year smile.

Hi, you sound almost convinced that this is over but as others have said, symptoms do vary day to day.

That said, in my experince with multiple miscarriages, for my last 4 miscariages i refused to have HCG levels taken because they do not tell me anything helpful.
Sometimes they are low, sometimes higher, sometimes increase marginally after 24-48 hours sometimes drop....all ending in the same way sadly.

When my pregnancy symptoms decreased, i always just knew in my heart.

I have everything crossed for you xxx

I got a bfp on my 6th go, after an IVF ectopic and a miscarriage, as well as a natural loss before then. I actually started crying when the second line came up on the test as I was more than half convinced I was just setting myself for another epic fail. Then I was spotting from around week 6-10 and was convinced it was all over, but DS is now a bouncing 10 mo.

Good luck. Hope you have a very smooth and uneventful pg.

an update for completeness... levels from bloods yesterday are 23000 - which as less than 24 hours between I'm happy with. it just goes to show how 'in tune' with my body I am - not! am gibbering wreck...

TattyCatty Thu 28-Mar-13 14:48:11

Wonderful news! I know that it's so hard not to put everything under a microscope given what you've been through, but please take comfort from these amazing levels (ahem, I'll remind you of my paltry 89!) and try to relax.

EricNorthmansFangBanger Thu 28-Mar-13 14:56:15

Pollykitten Thu 28-Mar-13 15:49:11

I have wanged on many a time about trusting my instincts... turns out I don't know what I'm talking about! btw if anyone is interested to know, the clearblue conception indicator showed a drop as the hcg levels were so high, at a certain point it messes up the chemistry - its called the hook effect smile

Cuddlydragon Thu 28-Mar-13 16:31:56

Congratulations on your pregnancy, how lovely. Hope all continues to go so well.
