But, but, but jiggling is surely the jellyfishes way of moving so it is useful and thus the author of the book is really quite dumb ;) so no I wouldn't have bothered to buy it

What doesn't penis rhyme with?

Spero Fri 22-Mar-13 17:34:31

I don't understand the point of this thread now so I am taking my foo foo upstairs to the little girls room to have a tinkle.

perplexedpirate Fri 22-Mar-13 17:33:25

It doesn't rhyme. That's quite annoying.

Spero Fri 22-Mar-13 17:33:00

You might not like saying 'penis' but I don't see how that makes it offensive?

TerrysNo2 Fri 22-Mar-13 17:30:12

honestly, I am a very laid back person grin

but I am a but of a prude so maybe this is another one of those things that offend me, like calling private parts by the proper names shudder wink

I've got an old Nursery Book at home that describes people who wash on A Sunday as Sluts. Gotta love the old books grin

YABU. PLEASE put your worrying energy into something that actually matters

Spero Fri 22-Mar-13 17:24:25

So is your child never allowed to express a negative opinion about anything?

And this is helpful how?

TerrysNo2 Fri 22-Mar-13 17:23:25

I assume he used it as it rhymes with fun, I guess I just wouldn't want DS to go somewhere and call someone dumb, it just doesn't seem like a word he should use in that context. I don't like stupid or idiot either, maybe I'm being a bit precious but I'd prefer him to learn these things later rather than sooner.

It's a kids book and should be full of nonsense.

There cannot be many books on this planet that we couldn't find something to be offended about.

insancerre Fri 22-Mar-13 17:22:11

I can think of more important things to worry about

complexnumber Fri 22-Mar-13 17:20:55

Why do you think it is inappropriate?

WowOoo Fri 22-Mar-13 17:20:45

Hopefully a 4 yr old won't copy that.

We have that book and it always goes down well. My 3 yr old hasn't called anything dumb. Yet!

Hide the book if it annoys you.

FireOverBabylon Fri 22-Mar-13 17:20:42

Can you think of an alternative to rhyme with fun?

It may be the best rhyme that the author could come up with.

Spero Fri 22-Mar-13 17:19:20

So, just out of interest what words are now acceptable for describing anything that we think is silly, stupid, idiotic etc? Didn't realise 'dumb' was on the blacklist. Or can I say blacklist now?

To be honest I think there are many more disturbing things in children's books than this.

KitchenandJumble Fri 22-Mar-13 17:18:56

What's wrong with it?

KatyTheCleaningLady Fri 22-Mar-13 17:17:52

CockyFox Fri 22-Mar-13 17:15:36

I think it is acceptable as I believe the term dumb inrelation to a person who can't speak is mute. ie deaf-mute not deaf and dumb.

TerrysNo2 Fri 22-Mar-13 17:10:30

Just bought Commotion in the Ocean for DS (age 4) and one of the rhymes says:

"the jellyfish just loves to jiggle
which the other fish think is quite dumb
she knows that's its not that all useful
but jigglings very good fun."

AIBU to think this is an inappropriate thing to read to my child?
