To think the delivery driver could have come back??

Had to wait for a new dishwasher to be delivered today between 1 and 5 but have no-one else to do the school run so had no choice but to stick a note on the door saying "on school run - be back asap".
As sodding luck would have it they turned up in the 20 minutes that takes, read the note and left me a message saying they couldn't wait because they "didn't know how long I would be" (I didn't want to put a time I would be back as that seems to be an invitation for a burglar).
I called and pleaded for them to come back but got the whole "sorry love, not up to me, it's been "failed" now, you'll have to re-order" angry
Now I get that I should have been there the whole time, and Im not expecting they should have waited but AIBU to think they could have gone on to the next job (where they were when I called) then just come back??!!

Delivery drivers always seem to be like this; you weren't there - fuck you then, you only get one chance then that's it!
AIBU or are they being jobsworth cunts who probably just wanted to finish their rounds early?!

yabvu and rude about the delivery driver. what if his next job was 50 miles away should he really back track to you???! wow rude and rather a massive lack of insight into the working lives of others.sad sad

Maybe lesson learned to you op. In future organise yourself better to make sure you or someone is in at all times. It's not like the company called you in the morning to arrange delivery so you had ample time to either make arrangements for a different day, someone in the house, or someone to get your children. It's not the drivers fault you are disorganised. They have a job to do, and this isn't sitting around waiting ages for customers to decide to come back.

When you arrange delivery you could have given your mobile number. You could have had a note put on the delivery saying to avoid between x and x time. I used to do this all the time if weekends weren't available. Never had any problems and the driver knew if they showed up during that time, they would have to wait.

Incidentally what would you have done if the delivery had shown up just as you were leaving to do the school run? Do you realise they don't unload until they know the customer is actually in because of time wasters?

When I've had deliveries, if I know I have to pop out, I've always let the company know. They've all worked around it. They normally give my number to the driver and they've called when they were on their way to make sure I am in.

OH is a delivery driver and it is annoying when he delivers to somebody who is out and doesn't deserve to be called names.

I agree with the majority.

Your "only 20 minutes" is 20 minutes sat waiting, falling behind schedule to them. That 20 minutes means the people at the end of their time slot end up having to wait longer for their delivery, it probably means the office will get calls off people complaining that it hasn't arrived on time.

YABU and I'm sure you know it. Putting a time you'll be back on the note is no more inviting a burglar in than alerting them in the first place that you are out. Mobile number would have been the obvious thing. They are not all jobsworth cunts. We had a chair delivered recently. The store used a firm for delivery that could only do two days a week, both of which are work days for me. It was a 9-5 slot. My parents live an hour away, worse in rush hour. Guess what? I asked nicely if they could not deliver until at least 11am and they agreed. Guess what else? they rang for directions instead of just giving up when they couldn't find the house. Also, depsite it officially being a "to the front door only" service, they carried the very large chair up the stairs to the first floor and maneuvered it in a tricky doorway. I agree that of some companies can do an hour slot and ring first service, they should all be able to, but basically YABVU to be annoyed with them for YOUR mistake.

YABVU. i've worked as a delivery driver (i wasn't driving but i was in the van) and honestly, there's no time to wait around. we're given a rota of houses to deliver to, and if we wait around, people at the end of the timeslot (say, between 3-5) get late deliveries, it all knocks on together and we finish late and get in trouble.

it's also true that delivery A may well be an hour away from delivery B. we can't just hang around in the area for twenty minutes and come back to you.

YABU. I had a new washing machine delivered a few weeks ago on a Saturday, in Cardiff, arrived just after 10. The drivers had already done 4 drops having come over from Weston s Mare and had another 20 or so to do that day.

I'd paid for installation/checking ok/removal of old machine which took a good 20 mins. If all their jobs were like that Plus all the driving around I wouldn't like to think what time they got back.

The guy said they often start from Exeter and come up our way, so if he had to wait for people like you on every job, they'd be stuffed. The driver will also have regs on his driving hours. The reason I had to pay (extra) for a Saturday delivery was because I can't guarantee I'll be in for the whole of a delivery slot during the week. Suck it down, lady, you were BIG wrong!

Your language suggests that you perceive the delivery drivers as inferior. If you knew you couldn't be in for a four hour stretch, why on earth did you arrange the delivery?

It's the Easter holidays next week. I imagine your need for a dishwasher can wait until then.

Although I don't agree with theop. Morning delivery slots are usually 8-1 so she would of had the same problem for the morning school run.

Dh is a delivery driver but for smaller parcels. He has a 40 minute drive from the depot to the start of his area and then 80+ drops to do over a fairly big area as well as collections.

He would struggle to double back as he has a route and it could set him back over an hour. He did this last week for one parcel as the customer was complaining and then was 2 hours late home as he had to sit in traffic to get back to the depot.

Drivers do have families too and they often start very early!

Two delivery drivers delivered my couch to me a few months ago. He told me that they had 33 deliveries to do that day - over a big geographical area. They have loads to get in and I expect couldn't just nip back.

Wow, talk about you be unreasonable. Why on earth should they wait around for you? Perhaps the driver actually wants to get back to his family tonight. His next drop could have been 20 miles from you. The world doesn't revolve around your school run.

The company may be unreasonable in giving you a 4 hour window, they should know to within an hour when they will be making a delivery. The driver OTOH didn't know what ASAP meant and it was just bad luck.
