to be shocked by this attitude?

Or is it because of my personal history that I am more sensitive?

Work friend today mentioned she had changed pills because previous didn't agree with her. Can't remember when she stopped first and is going to start taking second (Think another week before she takes new one) but anyway Dr told her to use condoms for a week because won't be covered. She has decided she can't be bothered with them - her boyfriend agrees. She then paused and said "It will probably be fine. I wouldn't have a baby at my age (21) though, no way! Am far too young, would just get rid if I got preg."

AIBU to think if you plan on having an abortion if you get pregnant then you should just use condoms or not have sex, it is only a week!

She knows about my history of preg loss, felt she was a bit insensitive saying that too. But I don't know if I am overly shocked by it because of my history iykwim?

What do you think? Is this a common attitude?

A colleague of mine had her 5th when we worked together and helpfully left her aftercare pamphlets from the hospital lying round the office, I was recovering from an ectopic at the time.

Doesn't really add up. If she was that blasé about contraception I'd expect her to be rather cavalier about taking the pill, too. My suspicion is that her BF refuses to wear a condom and she doesn't want to deny him or cause a row. That, sadly, is a hugely increasing problem among the younger generation today.

Regardless, of course YANBU. It shows a terrible lack of respect for life and her own sexual, physical and emotional health.

She is a insensitive idiot and a great advert for why sex / contraception should be taught from an early age, as for some it certainly doesn't sink in.

I think that this attitude is actually still rare but it's shocking when you come across it and therefore these instances are more memorable / newsworthy than the vast majority of non idiots.

YANBU. I would like to meet the 40 year old her in the future and see if her life has made her change her attitude.

Yadnbu. Ridiculous this attitude. Really. Whether its compounded by stupid tv, stupid media reports, uneducated people... Argh. hmm

twinklesparkles Thu 07-Mar-13 07:09:15

giraffesCantDateDucks Wed 06-Mar-13 19:49:03

No she didn't mean MAP - I suggested that and she said "oh that is an idea!....och no probably be fine!"

abbyfromoz Wed 06-Mar-13 19:31:40

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte Wed 06-Mar-13 19:17:29

YANBU and YANBOversensitive. Its not a nice attitude at all.

maddening Wed 06-Mar-13 19:11:50

Yanbu - and how on earth is a potential abortion easier than using a condom?! - it's an awful and stupid attitude!

eccentrica Wed 06-Mar-13 18:57:08

youthecat I think you and your daughter are being a bit too quick to believe rumours! Very very very few women have had 8 abortions, let alone by age of 18! I think that's teenage exaggeration.

Totally agree with the YANBUs about abortion, but is there any chance she was just thick and meaning the Morning after pill?

Still totally irresponsible, but not as bad. Still YANBU!

HeadfirstForHalos Wed 06-Mar-13 18:36:42

Abortion has it's place, but should never be used casually or as a "contraceptive".

morethanpotatoprints Wed 06-Mar-13 18:34:55

I think she is a very immature girl, not only with her attitude to pregnancy but announcing her beliefs at work.
Maybe she set out to shock, or gain attention.
Never mind she'll learn.

MurderOfGoths Wed 06-Mar-13 18:29:21

Used to have a friend who refused to use contraception, and yet hated children.

She ended up with two DC's who she was quick to dump on others, and she'd say, in front of the DC's, that they ruined her life.

JenaiMorris Wed 06-Mar-13 18:28:27

Quite aside from the insensitivity of saying this you OP, she clearly hasn't got a clue how difficult it is to actually get an abortion.

Silly girl.

SirBoobAlot Wed 06-Mar-13 18:27:26

If she doesn't want to use condoms, how hard is it to not have sex for a week?

I hate my age group sometimes.

catnipkitty Wed 06-Mar-13 18:21:13

YANBU. Disgusting attitude and insensitive. If condoms are really so bad, just don't have sex. Pathetic.

StuntGirl Wed 06-Mar-13 18:15:20

YANBU. There are better, cheaper options available to her and she's simply choosing not to use them. She's an idiot (and so's her boyfriend).

FreudiansSlipper Wed 06-Mar-13 18:11:54

her attitude is not a healthy but I think it shows lack of respect for her body more than anything and I wonder how keen her boyfriend is on using condoms and is he concerned about her getting pregnant

Wewereherefirst Wed 06-Mar-13 18:08:43

YADNBU. Abortion is not a form of birth control. Couldn't they just abstain for the week if they are too fucking lazy can't use condoms.

The scant regard of contraception is just backwards.

Moominsarehippos Wed 06-Mar-13 18:06:54

She can't keep her legs crossed for a week? Oh dear.
