Antibiotics rash query!

Posted also in children's health but thought aibu would get more traffic for a quick answer!

My DD, age 4, has been taking a course of Trimethoprim since Wednesday evening for a urinary tract infection. This morning she woke up with what looked like an allergy rash on her back and stomach which has since spread to her face. It is only slightly itchy and she has had no other symptoms such as fever etc. I spoke to the medical receptionist at her local GPs this afternoon who promised that her doctor would call back before end of day after all his appointments with a recommendation/possible alternative prescription. Lo and behold, no return phone call and the phone line went straight to voicemail at 6pm. I'm jot sure whether to continue with her course over the weekend or whether I should stop it immediately. Anyone have any advice?

Read the information leaflet inside the box and/or call NHS Direct. My son is allergic to penicillin and came up with a rash within 20 mins when he had a course at 4 months. The Dr had already advised me to stop the course immediately if he had an allergic reaction to it, but you really need proper medical advice. The pharmacist in your area doing nights duty may also be able to help.

Dr Google says that a mild skin rash is a common reaction.

"Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat."

Is her face swollen?

No not swollen, and she's acting as normal (although obvs asleep now) - just tried calling the nhs direct number but if its not considered an immediate emergency it's a 4 hour wait! Will try a 24 hour pharmacy!

Contact your doctor in my experience. I'm allergic to Erythromycin and the rash came first within a few hours but 24 hours later the rash was purple hives and i was vomiting continually.

You should still have out of hours advice at the weekend.
