It is a vile, vile phrase. For some reason I automatically assume that anyone using such phrases is in a very casual relationship but has for some reason decided to have a child. It is trampy.

Yes it is baby mama it is usually used by a father referring to a lady he has a child with but is not in a relationship with as with baby daddy.

I think it's from Black American "gang" culture? I've only heard it because I'm obsessed with The Wire at the moment - it's what the drug dealers/gangsters say about the mother's of their children.

Babymother/babyfather commonly used in jamaican culture to describe someone you have a child with but are not married to, it doesn't necessarily mean someone you aren't in a relationship with them at all. it just means not married to.
