A baby mama (also baby-mama and baby-mother) is generally defined as a mother who is not married to her child's father,

YANBU

It is a vile, vile phrase. For some reason I automatically assume that anyone using such phrases is in a very casual relationship but has for some reason decided to have a child. It is trampy.

Yes baby daddy is horrid too but I'd just heard baby mama when it struck me how awful it is!

I've only heard it said by Americans. I don't like it.

Twofaced, I was too ashamed to admit that's where I heard it! Although I think he said baby mum. And I honestly couldn't think how to spell mama, hence using mumma Grin

I think it's from Black American "gang" culture? I've only heard it because I'm obsessed with The Wire at the moment - it's what the drug dealers/gangsters say about the mother's of their children.

I would assume anyone who said it in the UK was being ironic, but then I don't watch Jeremy Kyle Grin

I hear it on Maury chat show and sometimes britflicks or programmes never actually hear it said out loud though, people can say I suppose their is worse things you could call a mother of a baby. would the posh version be baby Ma ma Wink

Ooh I love The Wire.

Yes it's awful. Very American. Americanisms in British accents make me cringe.

timidviper · 01/03/2013 17:22

It is vile and akin to calling a baby a bubba.

I think the phrase 'baby mother' is from Jamaican culture.

Babymother/babyfather commonly used in jamaican culture to describe someone you have a child with but are not married to, it doesn't necessarily mean someone you aren't in a relationship with them at all. it just means not married to.
